The latest version does stuff that you probably won't like.
It puts an AVG tool bar on every browser you have abd they're
installed in some manner that even Hijack Pro can't remove them.
(Does a BHO prefis mean something in this regard?)
Also, it has disabled the really nice "Fix Performance" feature.
In it's place, it downloads something names "CleanMyPC".
It's one of many of these things that say something like "found 218
errors on your machine and fixed 10 -- for $27 Ill fisx the rest.".

It is always silly for any user to download and let install
any application without first deciding which options to delete.
The AVG toolbar can be omitted by a "custom" install of Free
AVG. Similarly, it is not necessary to initiate the "Fix
Performance" button or activate the Free AVG firewall (if
another is already functioning satisfactorily) or to dowload
and install any of the other options being offered.

If one wants to remove Free AVG when uninstall fails, Grisoft
offers a complete uninstallation application that can be
downloaded from its support site.

Just a late followup........

I've been refurbishing a computer with a fresh installation of Windows,
followed by a lot of downloads and installation of freeware. These days,
you've really got to have your wits about you. In many installations,
doing a custom install and deselecting the 'extras' is not sufficient.
You've also got to take note of what (and which) licences you then agree
to, as the installer often makes a second attempt at slipping the
nasties past you.

What are you, stupid? The vast majority of software available is free *and*
not Microsoft. I have *thousands* of programs that are from non-MS sources.

And on the subject of "not Microsoft", there are many software houses that
are *at least* on par with MS. Adobe and Oracle both immediately come to
mind, not to mention things like the Free Software Foundation and the Mozilla
Foundation.
