As said in a previous post My XP computer is acting up. It is almost 8
years old, so it owes me nothing. With the latest W 8.1.1 upgrade that
system is now a useable system, so a new computer is not as distasteful
as it was.

The way it is going, I expect the XP system to fail with in the next year.

My question, If I buy a desktop, is there any reason I can not use a
small flat screen TV as a monitor for the CPU?

The advantages is it comes with speakers built in, so that is two less
units sitting on the computer desk. In my initial investigations it
appears that computer monitor don't always have speakers

It could then be used as a TV if needed.

Viewsonic makes good monitors with internal speakers. Costco and Sam's on line.

I tried that a while back - used a cheap-ish 28" HD LED TV as a monitor but
I found the picture to be unacceptable for reading text.

Then again I *am* used to Dell IPS monitors (with the otional 'soundbar' so
no need of separate speakers). Rather spoiled, and now the budget doesn't
stretch to such luxury. However TVs aren't designed with reading text at
close range in mind - I guess it all depends what you use your computer for.
If it's just gaming and watching video files then a TV would likely be fine.
Otherwise I'd suggest that you try to get one on a trial so you can take it
back if it's unacceptable.

Depends on the PC video/audio outputs and the TV inputs.
If both have HDMI a single HDMI cable, if VGA to VGA you'll need a separate
cable for audio, same for DVI to DVI.

Should have added I have an older PC connected to TV via VGA with the audio
going to a hi-fi rather than the TV. Also a newer laptop connected to newer
TV via HDMI, picture and sound very good in both cases. You may have to
fiddle about a bit with resolution on PC and screen mode on TV to get it to
suit you.
