Ok. I've read about the old regclean provided by microsoft and
that it doesn't work for XP. Although it seems to be still functional
and my trial run didn't cause any problems. (A case of try first, read
later)

A bit more searching turned up jv16 Power Tools. It has a nice regclean
function and seems to work nicely. http://www.jv16.org/

Any other thoughts out there or experience with other apps?

I'm trying to clear up a hardware/software problem with an IR connection to
my Nokia 3360. (used to synch up the address books) It uses the BAFO IRDA
USB module and did work a few weeks back. But after a memory failure and
system crash, corrupt registry, long hairy story, it no longer works properly. Removing/Reinstalling the driver doesn't solve the
problem so I decided
maybe removing the driver then doing a regclean might. If not it might
just be a compatibility problem with the latest OS patches and then the whole
exercise is moot.

Just a quick followup. That was a ROYAL FREEKING PAIN!
Turns out I had some leftover files in the windows/inf directory and
hardware installation was picking up the wrong one. Searched for files
containing the driver I had removed and moved them out of that directory
then reinstalled the hardware. All is fine now.

wonkey.

As predicted, DougW wrote this:

Now, get RID of Microsoft's RegClean before you're tempted to run it again
some day and you really mess things up. You're lucky, most have to reinstall
XP.

Try system mechanic from iolo.com. You can download for free and give it a
try.

That's what I read. Thankfully caught that before a reboot and ran the .reg file to
put the removed entries back in. RegClean is gone, deleted, pushing up daises...

I'll give it a look, thanks.
