Installing HP 400. XP finds new hardware, installs driver then finds printer
a second time and installs printer again. How can I disable or prevent the
wizard from continuing?

Are you connecting the printer after boot up or running hardware detection?
IF so, I suggest you remove the printer (both instances) in XP, reboot with
the printer connected and on, and let XP detect it by itself. If it still
detects it twice, you may have a cable problem. Parallel or USB?

The general rule with HP gear is to uninstall the software --remove the
printer via device manager -- switch the computer off and disconnect the
printer from the computer. Boot up and install the software--- switch OFF.
Reconnect the printer and Windows will find the printer, install it and then
in stall the driver

Installing a HP 400. Hardware wizard finds driver, insstalls, prints test
page & finds printer all over again! Any ideas on how to stop this or how to
disable wizard? Also not convinced this is the correcy driver as printer
wants cartridge changed.

HP site. Been there, done that. Hp says drivers come with XP, no other
driver available. Same goes for 2000 drivers which was an idea I tried too.

I've been through the same thing w/ HP 722. What was happening was XP was
loading the 720 driver instead of the 722.
Anyways, try this...(Sorry if not 100% accurate, but I switched back to
Windows 2000):

When you boot XP and get the found new hardware wizard, make sure you have
the original XP CD or the source files available. Follow the wizard and
when it says it has found a driver, there should be an option to install an
alternate driver. Click on install alternate driver and select the exact
match for the particular printer, in my case it was the 722 and not the 720.
Then XP will pull the correct driver off of the CD/source and it should
work. Kind of an irriating thing w/ XP, Windows 2000 finds my printer just
fine and I couldn't figure out for awhile why XP couldn't find it. But
that's Microsoft for you.

I hope this helps! =)
