Details are sketchy but I have been warned by people who work for a major
international bank in their security department.
It seems that emails and Usenet posts which begin with Re: are somehow
infected and can cause serious damage to peoples computers if they don't
know what they are doing.
Apparently normal methods of checking for malicious content like looking at
the number of lines or the size of the email/post do not work as this figure
is disguised.
People are being warned to also shut down their internet connection if they
are not actually receiving mail at the time to help prevent spreading the
worm.
I am a gardener and do not understand the technicalities of it but it sound
very nasty.

| Your a gardener? great can you answer my question, my wife had some
| small geranium plants in a small pot outside. They seemed "sickly"
| for weeks then she noticed the were drooping. On close inspection
| there was a nasty little grub chewing away at the roots. It looks
| like a cross between a maggot and a termite as it has a bulbous red
| head. Someone said vine weavil grub. Would you know if that's true?
| I said if it was a virus thing then I'd probably have software for it
| but then I say anything to get out of gardening lately.
Roots and tubers may be damaged by the larvae of the vine weevil, which feed
on the roots, and tunnel into the tubers and in severe attacks plants may
die. The symptoms of attack are sudden wilting of plants due to root loss
and in the case of adult weevils small sections bitten out of leaves. The
most effective control is to use the natural vine weevil parasite. This is a
soil living nematode that infests the body of the grub stage of the vine
weevil and kills it.
My gardening methods are very simple.
If its green, cut it
If it stings, dig it up
If its dead, burn it
Just remember the bees are our friends, fuck wasps.

If you took a standard sized maggot as a reference point these are a bit
bigger with a fat head, the head is either orange or red.
I think google finds pictures, just put in vine weevil larvae.

| Found a picture, definitly them. I like the sound of these nematodes

| summer when ground is moist)
| "An Eye For A Root" seems fair enough.
|
The little buggers are like living straws, they will just suck and shit all
day long, I dont know if you will need a particular type of nematode there
are something like 25,000 types known to man.
A good nursery should be able to point you in the right direction.
If it was me I would just burn the whole lot.

>> Do you want a pic of a Charina trivirgata? What size?
When I asked what size, I meant pixels ... The Rosy on the Misc is 540 x407 -
I'll send you some pics later of a similar size - I will have to look out the
negs...
I wrote some software "SnakeByte" for a USGS research project at San Diego State
University - it tracked the body temperatures of Charina trivirgata (rosy boa)
in the research area behind the SD Wild Life Park at Escondido - Last year we
visited them & they took us out on a field trip - Wow, what a day out! I
actually found a Rosy - It was taken back to the lab for dna sampling and the
fitting of a tiny radio transmitter - it was then released on the same spot that
it was found....
Great day out - great memories
To keep it on topic - SnakeByte will run on XP!

Check your email . I just sent you a swag of photos of Charina (Lichanura)
trivirgata roseofusca (Coastal Rosy Boas). I zipped 'em all up into one file.
All pics have been optimised for web publication, no work required...
Enjoy!
> More to the point I'm
>interested in your little program. Any chance of a copy of that to see?
Yes & no...You need some extra kit for it to work.
I developed SnakeByte solely for the USGS folk at San Diego State University.
The snakes (10 rosy boas in this particular field study) in the research area
were fitted with miniature radio transmitters, each snake is on a different
discrete frequency. The transmitters pulsed at a certain rate of pulses per
minute depending on the body temperature of the animal. The rate was
calculatable to an exact temperature.
SnakeByte software was controlling a computer controlled radio receiver (An AOR
AR8000). The SnakeByte switched the radio to the first preselected channel and
recorded the audio (onto the HD) for one minute and then switched channel to the
next frequency an did the same. It cycled through all the frequencies until that
particular cycle was completed.
It did this every 15 minutes for up to 36 hours at a time. The whole system;
Laptop Computer, radio, controller interface, truck batteries, power regulator
et al had to be left to run unattended as it was hidden in desert area miles
from habitation.
The resulting recorded data was fed through to some additional software that
counted the pulses and spat out the temperature value for each recording!
Other temperature sensors took the readings at certain heights above the ground,
ground level and so many inches below ground - This gave the scientists a
complete set of temperature profiles to co relate to the snake's temperature.
So! As I say, the software is no darn good without an AR8000 radio and an RS232
computer interface. SnakeByte was a cut down and heavily modified version of
Channel Commander V2 software that had developed a while back - If you want a
copy of that you can download it from my web site:
www.odcombe.demon.co.uk look in the Radio Comms section.... You can run it
without a radio plugged in but it is like having a music programme for a
keyboard but not having a keyboard!
If you are into stiring electonic components with a soldering iron, I have
published a circuit, diagrammes and construction instructions for an RS232
interface in the same section.
>I have just started taking my City & Guilds Level 1 in Visual basic exams
>and considering actually learning something useful next year as this is of

What! VB is of use...many jobs adverised for VB developers however that said,
C++ is to be reccomended as well..
I wish you well with your C&G - it's always worth while having some certificates
to frame, they help cover up the damp patches on the wall!
seriously though, GL with it
> What language was this program wrote in?
Originally in VB3Pro then rewritten for VB6Pro
>Love to see it anyway if possible
Download Channel Commander V2 from my site - whilst you are there, take a look
at the HTML Interest area and download a nice realtime clock (a tiny 2kb Flash
file) for your webpages... all colours to suit any scheme... they have a
'rollover state' but no hyperlink added - they are safe to use...
Have fun
</off topic>
Snakebyte runs on all OS win95, 98, ME, NT and XP. I dont know if it will run on
a penguin! I dont know anyone that dumb!

Opps - something went slightly wrong! I had zipped em all up and deleted the
individual photos but they got sent as the zipped file AND the individual images
- sorry for tying up the line for a while!
