I am very puzzled at all of the hatred expressed towards Windows XP. I run
it and I can't find a single thing wrong with it. It is the best OS that
Microsoft has put out. I have read the user complaints at Cnet and this
forum and all of them stem from myths and ignorance. Lets explore the common
complaints and I will show that they stem from ignorance.

Windows XP is not stable and crashes all the time. There are only a few
things that makes Windows XP crash and all can be fixed. One is hardware. I
built a new computer a few months ago. I got a cheap case that included a
power supply. The case itself is great. It has tons of room, more then my
full tower and can hold many hard drives. I built the computer and installed
XP. As I was installing software and configure the system it would blue
screen all the time. Instead of yelling and screaming Microsoft sucks and
Bill Gates should burn in hell like 90% of others would do. I thought hey
case just cost $29 with power supply. AMD Athlon needs a high quality power
supply. So I ran some test on it and determined it had problems holding its
3.3v and 5v rails. I bought an Antec 400w PS and the system is now rock
solid stable.

Other problems can be drivers. There are people out there putting in 5 year
old CDs that came with a 5 year old printer. XP is less then a year old. How
can a 5 year old driver CD have drives for an OS that is a year old? Many
people put in their 5 year old driver CDs and force the drivers to install.
You get nothing but problems. Don't do it. Go on the internet and download
nice pretty new drivers designed for XP.

Correct drivers for XP can cause problems in a rare cases. This fall in my
old computer I have an Elsa geforce2 MX graphics card. I downloaded a new
Nvidia driver at the time and when I tried to play any video of any format
my system would blue screen. Instead of running around yelling Microsoft is
evil and Bill Gates should burn in hell I thought Nvidia had a bug in their
driver that my system didn't like. No big deal, hell even Nvidia isn't evil
just human. I used the great driver roll back feature and problem solved. I
then waited for their next driver to come out and it worked fine. No
trouble. I exercised the use of my brain and solved the problem instead of
playing the blame game.

Many stability problems come from people upgrading over top a previous OS.
We all know that can cause problems so always do a fresh install. You can
even do a fresh install with an upgrade CD. I talked to a Unix administrator
and asked when ever he upgraded to a new version of HP UX if they just
upgraded or format and install clean. He said they always format and install
clean to avoid problems. Do the same with XP and any future OS upgrades.

If you have good working hardware and correct drivers, clean install XP is
very stable. My system has been up for 2 months without a reboot. My older
computer runs XP as well and It has been up 5 months with no reboot. No one
can say XP is not stable period.

Another complaint is XP is bloated. It requires too many resources. XP does
require quite a bit more resources than 2000 or me. XP has features that
require more hardware which is great. If you have a fast, powerful computer
you want the software to have innovative features that take advantage of
that hardware. You don't want to be stagnate with 386 technology. All OS and
software upgrades including Linux requires additional hardware requirements
because of the reasons above. Hardware advancements means software
advancements so we can do things we couldn't in the past. My P166 with 32
megs of ram could run Mandrake 5 and 6 but not 7 or 8. I need to upgrade my
ram. I don't think XP is bloated like many whine it is. It requires 128 megs
of ram (256 much better). That's nothing. I have a gig of ram and most
current (2 years or newer) computers have over 128. I know 99% of the
readers here have way more then 128 megs of ram. It takes up 2 gigs of hard
drive space. News flash 20 gig HD drives have been out 4 years or more. I
have an 80gig. 2 gigs is not an issue. XP requires a 300 mhz CPU. My old
computer is 800mhz and my new is XP 2000 (1.67mhz) and most have way more
then 300 mhz. You can buy a PC that has way more hardware requirements to
run XP for $300. XP bloated my ass.

Many people complain about the "fisher price" look. If you don't like it
change it. You can switch to the classic look or download a new look from
themexp.org. There is no reason to complain about something when it is easy
to change.

Many people say XP is over priced. I find it very reasonable in price. You
can get OEM home for $88 and Pro is $149. Most of us here buy OEM. Also you
get XP when you buy a new computer. $88 is one of the smallest cost you will
make on your computing investment. How many of you have spent $350 on the
latest and greatest graphics card? To be frank XP does more then an over
priced graphics card that will cost $100 in 4 months. XP allows you to do
everything with your computer while a $350 graphics card only allows you to
play games tad faster then the smart person who waited 4 months to pay $100
on the second best graphics card. $88 is nothing compared to the other cost
we all pay for computer parts. Remember OSs are products.

Many complain that XP is not secure. This summer all you hear on the news is
the "rash of kidnappings". Child kidnappings are less then last year and are
dropping every year. Kidnapping is very rare, but the media blows it way out
of proportion to get viewers in order to get and keep sponsors. The media
(and Linux users) does the exact same thing about Windows security. Windows
is secure and whenever a vulnerability is discovered it is fixed. If you
want it more secure close some ports and get a firewall. There are many free
ones that work well. If you have very sensitive data put it on a cd in a
safe. A hacker can't hack into your computer, reach his arm through the
monitor and pick the safe. Most people are like me and all a hacker will
find is pretty pictures and MP3. Most hacked computers are not Microsofts,
Redhats or Solaris fault. It is the administrators fault. XP is just as
secure as anything else and for some like me with just pretty pictures on
their computer security is not an issue.

Many complain about the Viruses that can infect XP. Get virus protection
software then. In my 15 years of using computers I have never ever gotten a
virus. Not one, even a tiny cute one. I use 2 things, common sense and virus
protection software. Whenever I get strange email I use common sense and hit
the pretty delete button. The few that escape are cleaned by my virus
protection software that I keep updated.

Rebooting when you patch the OS or install a driver is a common and foolish
complaint. One when a new patch or driver is released you don't have to
update unless it will fix a problem. Also you know when you update you will
have to reboot so you prepare. You are not going to decide to update while
you are writing a million word document and forget to save before you
reboot. You can choose to update when it is convenient for you. So reboot is
planned on and not an issue. After all it only takes a minute.

Authorization is often thought as evil. Many say it steals your privacy.
Authorization is different then registering. When you authorize all you do
is give Microsoft a number that tells them nothing and they send you another
useless # that authorizes your XP. Nothing wrong with that. It is no
different then stores putting alarm devices on merchandise to prevent theft.
Companies have a right to protect their products from theft period. No you
can't install it on more then one computers but it was against the law with
DOS 1,2,3,4,5,6 photoshop, this and that software as well. Microsoft just
made it harder which they have every right to do. Windows is a product and
Microsoft has every right to make sure all copies have been paid for period.

Many geeks say Windows have been dummied down. Yes it is easy with many
wizards. It is great for computer users who don't know as much as we do in
this forum. It is also great for us as well. The ease of use translates to
power users as efficiency. You can install software, add new hardware and
many other things fast and easy so you can get to work. Computers are used
for work and play such as cad, photo editing, weather forecast, needle
stitch patterns, games and many other things. Not for compiling kernels,
editing cryptic text files and worrying about dependencies. However you can
tweak, configure and do many hard geeky things with Windows XP. XP has a
command line that can do many powerful things. Read a book on the registry
and really unleash the power of XP. XP does not make geeks feel stupid at
all. You can spend many years learning all there is to learn about XP.

Windows isn't compatible with many hardware and software. This stems from
users who put in their 5 year old driver disk in and expect the drivers to
work in a year old OS. That won't happen. If you have trouble getting a
device to work go to the manufactures web site and download the XP driver.
If the manufacture doesn't have a driver email them. More emails the more
likely they will release a driver for XP. It will let them know that XP
users want to use that device. It is the manufactures fault for not having
XP drivers not Microsoft. More devices work with XP then any other OS. I can
go to B&H photo and buy any film scanner and fact it will work with XP where
as with Linux it likely won't. So not being compatible with anything is pure
bull.

With software most that won't work is older virus software, cd burning and
DVD player software. With virus software you had to upgrade virus software
whenever you upgrade a new OS. It has been this way when people upgraded
from DOS 1 to 2. Whenever you upgrade an OS just have an extra $40 for new
virus software because the old won't work. Virus software needs to be
programmed specially for the particular OS for it to work and virus software
cannot be programmed for an OS that is 2 years down the road. CD burning and
DVD software have device drivers that are programmed for the particular OS
and not future OS so you will have to upgrade. For regular software such as
Dreamweaver, PhotoShop, freehand, my happy, happy finger paint will work in
XP. If on the very very rare case it doesn't use the compatibility wizard.

I follow the advice that I stated and because of that I do not have any
trouble or complaints with XP. My system is rock solid stable and does
everything with no glitches. All you have to do is stop playing the blame
game and learn a little and XP can be perfect for you as well. The best part
of XP is that is runs more and better software then any other OS, after all
the sole purpose of a computer is to run software.

Wow! You've been preparing that for awhile, huh. ;-)

Your points are correct, but note that a lot of our recent XP Sucks posts are
from Linuxfucks.

why is there a linux war going on in here lateley ??

ive tried both os's and really am not fussy about favoring either..

and im sure moaning and complaining isnt helping either....

if we have fellows cross posting to linux froups and that pisses the linux
froup off then its down to them to sort it with the people concerned.......

it isnt all of us to blame......

and another thing it is a free country i happen to live in too....

ever heard of free speech?

it was designed so people with a different opinion can piss others off to
get a reaction.....

peace

Very well put!
I have never had any problems with xp either, my system runs faster and
smoother than ever before and thats not bad for a machine with a 500mhz cpu.
I mentioned in another post a while back that windows xp has encouraged me
to upgrade to a faster and better machine as soon as funds permit.
The reply i had ' i have linux and it runs on my 300mhz machine and
therefore i dont need to waste money and upgrade'
Fine i guess, but has a linux user tried encoding a video file of around 6
to 8 gigs? this would take around 30 hours to encode on a machine of that
spec, i would sooner upgrade my system and do the same in around 5 to 6
hours.
At the end of the day it depends what you want to use the system for.
Another issue raised often is security, Linux users laugh at Xp users for
downloading patches to fix the problems, well this is sensible but oddly
enough before i download the service pack i had never used any patches.
And prior to installing this i run a vulnability check at pc flank, i was
amazed that my system had none at all, in fact it was invisible to hackers.
Then there is the user interface, if you dont like it change it, whats the
problem?
With windows xp my whole family can use it, from a novice like my ten year
old to myself.
