Any guess as to whether the coming "Windows Blue" ( re-do of Windows
8 designed for non-touch screen computers) might be a worthy successor
to XP Pro??

Given the iherent stupidity of the one-OS-for-all-devices philosophy,
I wouldn't be very hopefull.

Are you considering upgrading from XPpro to Blue? If so, what does
Blue offer that you need and that XPpro doesn't offer? Maybe I need
it too but just don't know it :-)

As of now, I've only seen speculation that Windows Blue will be "Coke
Classic"--a return to the familiar Windows desktop experience, at least
as an option. That makes sense to me, but that's no predictor for what
Microsoft will do.

If you're looking to upgrade, I would suggest grabbing a copy of Windows
7 Pro 64-bit while it's available.

One of the big things that makes Windows 7 64-bit attractive to me, over
Windows XP, is its native ability to address much more than 4GB of RAM.

Start menu search is also pretty cool, but tidbits like that can be
added on to XP.

I can see where that would be an advantage for some users. For
myself, I very seldom use more than about 1.5 GB of my installed 4 GB.

In addition to what Grinder mentioned, as said in the news, the "Start"
button will be brought back to the task bar, but *only* the button, not
including the menu. It's their (Microsoft) middle solution based on both
tablet and desktop users feedbacks.
