CD that I can lay on my CD player

Virtually all cd mastering software will automatically convert .wav .mp3
etc. to the required format as part of the process.
Simply drag your mp3's to the correct order within your mastering software
and burn the cd.

Most decent CD burning software will do the conversion "on the fly". You
do not convert them first. In fact burning a .CDA file to CD will not
work.

If you do not have CD burning software you can download a 30 demo of
Nero from www.nero.com or RecordNow Max from www.stompinc.com Many
people prefer Nero as a burning program. You simply drag the mp3s to the
burn window and the software does the rest. Use CD-R media when creating
audio CDs. You should not use CD-R/W for creating audio CDs unless you
have a player that specifically says it can play CD-R/W. Most home and
auto stereo systems can read from CD-R/W.

A nice free CD Burning app can be found here http://tinyurl.com/j3t just
click on [Software]

Er... it wasn't suggested for "directions." If he checks the manual to see
if the sw will convert, he can save a drink coaster.
