I had a problem yesterday and I couldn't figure out how to use the repair
console.
I came home from work, turned on my computer and got a message that
"windows/system32" folder was missing or corrupt. I tried to use my XP disk
to do a repair and when I chose repair, I couldn't figure out what I was
supposed to do next.
Any help is appreciated,
Larry

The Repair option and the Recovery Console are two different things.

To Repair, you just follow the prompts.

To use the Recovery Console, you need to know a bit of DOS.

Have you been altering the boot.ini file?

No, I haven't been altering anything. I had just reinstalled alst week
after the same problem occured the week before.
I know very little DOS, but I do know enough to get by if someone was to
tell me the commands I needed.

If this is a recurring problem I would try to look into the cause as well.
It sounds like a possible bad HD with no other info available.

Hard drive occured to me also. I already replaced the one that had XP
installed on it the first time this happened. Who makes a decent hard
drive? This one and the other are both Fujitsu's. I had pretty good
service out of the one I am running right now. It is an 8 Gb.
My system is
900Mhz Athlon Tbird
Aopen AK72 Motherboard W/onboard sound
256 Mb RAM
Diamond A200 Video card W/8Mb Video Ram
Acer 50X CD-ROM
I know this thing should run XP, but it sure does give me a lot of trouble.

I used to be a big fan of IBM drives but with the problems their current
offerings are having, I'll stay away from them for a while. I am currently
using Seagate and Maxtor HD's and have had little to no trouble with them.
Are both of these drives the same model? I would be suspicious of two
different drives having exactly the same problem unless they were the same
type and made by the same manufacturer. If you purchase a different drive
like a Maxtor 30 Gig and this same problem happens again, it could be caused
by either a bad HD controller on the system board or software related such
as a virus. Do you have anti-virus software on that machine? Does your
system board have hardware monitoring? My Asus does and it also comes with
some pretty good monitoring software. If yours has it and the monitoring
software I would suggest that you load it (if it is XP compatable) and let
it run in the background. If you are having problems with heat or a bad
power supply it should let you know. I tend to stay away from system boards
with built in graphics or sound cards myself, they tend to use substandard
components for these features when compared to the stand alone cards of the
same type. If your setup has any possible weak spots it may be the built in
sound and the video card. The only reason that I suggest the video card may
be a problem is that at 8 MEG it sounds like an older card and we both know
how well XP works with older hardware.

As far as attempting to repair the current install of XP, run the install as
if you were doing a new install and skip by the first repair option. When
it gets to the point where it asks you to make a selection on what partition
to install to, if it finds an install that is repairable, it will give you
an option to repair it there. This repair does not bring up the repair
console but reinstalls while maintaining your existing registry settings and
installed software.

Both drives are 5700rpm, but one is 8Gb and the other is 30Gb. I am going
to check to see if my MB disk has hardware monitoring software that is
compatible with XP. I know it has some. I am running Norton 2002
anti-virus software. I have thought about a new Video card, but have been
to cheap to buy one. Also thinking about new sound card and speakers.
Thanx for the help,
Larry
