To Repair, you just follow the prompts.
To use the Recovery Console, you need to know a bit of DOS.
Have you been altering the boot.ini file?

As far as attempting to repair the current install of XP, run the install as
if you were doing a new install and skip by the first repair option. When
it gets to the point where it asks you to make a selection on what partition
to install to, if it finds an install that is repairable, it will give you
an option to repair it there. This repair does not bring up the repair
console but reinstalls while maintaining your existing registry settings and
installed software.
