I have been upgrading from Windows ME and while I would like to do a
clean install there are a lot of proprietary drivers on the HD that
I'm concerned with losing from a reformat. So I have elected to
upgrade Windows rather than start raw.
The first install kept locking up at wierd times and had other
problems but those may have resulted from a long history of Registry
Problems from the historical ME enviornment.
The secondand third Install was started right after doing a Factroy
Recovery each Install is quit unique. The first interfered with the
modem and sound card in by setting off a high pitched squeal, hung up
and kept locating a phantom pointing device.
My recent attempt seems to be running okay except for an annoying
problem with movie player. It only runs in 5-6 second spurts and
takes forever to load.
When I tried to install it, I used the upgraded install utility
downloaded from MS and it flipped me into a DOS install but I kept
having trouble copying files. I was given the choice to try again,
quit or skip. I always selected try again even if it took many retrys
but eventually they all installed. That seemed odd.
It now runs on a FAT32 platform but that I have three different
results from a basic install is odd.
Any thoughts on the reasons or potential problem I'm dealing with.

Upgrades are not a good idea. Your idea about drivers is based on a false
notion. Almost none of your ME drivers will work in XP. Any hardware that
works under XP is using XP drivers. You should look for XP drivers for the
essential things (such as modem/NIC card so you can get online), save them
on CD or somewhere, and then search for XP-specific drivers after your
installation. Win2k drivers will usually suffice until you find XP ones.
That's an improvement, I guess. But "random" is just so unpredictable.
