My old Win98 computer died and I bought a new WinXP machine. I would
like to be able to access the data from my old Win98 machine's hard
drive-a 6.4 GB FAT32 format, on my new machine while in XP. I
installed the old hard drive as a slave on the new XP machine and it
is recognized in the disk management. However, I've been unable to
find how to assign a drive letter to the old drive (now disk1) so it
can be used in XP. I know I need to do an initialization for the
drive in XP, but the only option I've found in disk management when
right clicking on the drive is to delete the partion and losing all
the data which is not what I want to do. If I can leave the data as
FAT32 and it can still be accessed by another WIN98 system that would
be great.

If I disconnect my primary drive on the new computer, it will boot up
on the WIN98 disk so I have had some data access. It only boots in
safe mode which limits what I can do.

Any help would be appreciated in accessing my old drive's data in my
new computer.

Past that point, pointers in better backup methods or software
utilizing my CD burner which would avoid needing to retrieve data from
the hard drive would also be welcome.

CONTROL PANEL/ADMINISTRATION TOOLS/COMPUTER MANAGEMENT/DISK MANAGEMENT then
right click on the old HDD and assign whatever letter you want for it!
50/50 it will work but worth a go. Lemme know the results!

The assign drive letter option is greyed out. The only selectable
option is to delete the partition. Any options here?

Is this happening only because the old HDD has a MBR? Is there a way
I can delete the MBR and be able to have the disk management allow me
to assign this drive.
