I'm having a little problem with my command prompt under win xp. I'm
using c:\windows\system32\command.com as command interpreter, but
something very similar happens if I try c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe.
(I'm not sure what the difference is): I have an old version of a
unix command simulator, and if I try something like "!}fmt" from vi, I
get the error "cannot load command. system halted" and then the
command prompt window freezes and I have to kill it. I've encountered
something like this before, under win NT, and if I recall correctly
the solution was to add an option to the "shell=" line in the
config.sys that said something like "/e=some big number" to give it
more memory for the command line. However, I can't find any file
called config.sys in my c: drive! what happened to config.sys? is
there anyplace I can put this option now? TIA for any help.

Like WinNT and Win2K before it, WinXP does not use CONFIG.SYS. Most
environmental variables are set by right-clicking My Computer > Properties >
Advanced > Environment Variables. There is also a
%Windir%\System32\CONFIG.NT that can be used to is used to initialize the
"MS-DOS" environment.
