I'm looking for software that will replace the excellent HP CD-Writer Plus I
used with Windows 98SE. This program allowed me to treat my CD just as
though it was a hard drive (read, write, delete, etc). With the XP software,
I find that I can no longer delete files I wrote to the CD, am I correct?

I've read several posts here about CD-RW software and it appears the Nero is
a popular replacement for the XP recording software. Will this program allow
me to delete files on the CD? Appreciate comments please.

Don't bother with packet writing anymore, you might have thought it was cute
but it is shit.

Trust me, you don't need it.
If you don't trust me then trust JohnR.

Nero is cool many are also raving about Maxdoodaa whatever from
www.stompinc.com

Give it a whirl and let us know what you think.

Packet writing is very useful for people who want and need to have backups
that are constantly changing. Me for instance, have weekly based backups and
use a CD-RW disc to store it, which allows me to change just what I need,
for example a single changed file which can be easily erased and recorded
again very easily. Just because you don't advantage of packet writing don't
trash it as not useful because it is, at least for me!

InCD from Nero works a treat on XP. No matter what Gazwad says;-)

Their latest downloads (Nero) work fine. I use CD as enormous floppies
better than a Zip drive.

Jim if you have an HP Writer you qualify for a free version of Veritas DLA. You can find that at the HP site. DLA is packet writing software. First it "formats" a CD-R or CDR/W then you can use it like a huge floppy or a small hard drive. If you do not have an HP Writer you can get DLA bundled with RecordNow Max http://www.stompinc.com/trial/index.phtml?stp (there is a 30 day trialware to see if this is what you want) Both RecordNow Max and DLA work nicely with XP however you must disable XP's built in recording function first. You may wish to look at Alex Nichol's excellent resource on CD Burning in XP http://www.aumha.org/a/xpcd.htm

My HP Cd Writer came with Adaptec CdCreator software and I have a lot of
data on CD's that I want to be able to update. I looked at the other
software versions like Nero and the HP software but it did not appear that I
would be able to write to these old CDRW discs using the software. I chose
to buy the Roxio CDCreator 5 (Roxio is the co that owns the CDCreator now)
You may also want to consider this before updating since the cost in time
by switching to different packet writing software instead of updating the CD
Packet software that you have been using

Veritas' DLA can read Roxio's formats. It's about the only one that can
read Direct CD format.

I agree. I've found that DLA can read Direct CD disks formatted with version 2.5 and up as well as it can read Packet CD, Prassi abcd, Sony abcd and InCD formatted CDs. So if you have files stored on media formatted with any type of packet formatting software then DLA is a good bet for retrieving that info. It can't always continue to write to the disk though but at least you recover your files. You can get a trial version of RecordNow Max from here http://www.stompinc.com/trial/index.phtml?stp
