what does your /proc/cpuinfo look like ?
I'd tell you if I knew how to get that. I'm a n00b, remember. And I've been
using linux just long enough now to know that my brain is going
aaaarrrghhh!
If I can get this other CPU going and upgrade to 2.6.x kernel, I'll persist
with this OS. Mandrake 9.2 is much better than 9.1 - it's not as slow -
nowhere near as slow. I'm going to have to work on this interface, too.
It's too chunky for me. I put the improved speed down to having real nVidia
drivers - hooray.

Can you open a terminal?
It should be on the menu under System Tools.
If you can, type the following command:
cat /proc/cpuinfo
That is an informaiton text file that will tell you what the system thinks
in terms of what CPUs are there and what their specs are...

Yes. It's a very fast machine. The slow part was downloading the patches and
updates over my 1.5Mbps pipe.

to have improved a bit though.

Not at all. XP goes on first so there is no LILO. Besides, I can promote and
demote disk device slots in BIOS, so this linux installation doesn't even
know about my Server 2003 installation on my RAID drives. It only knows
about the XP on the secondary IDE channel. Neat, huh.

No. I have a 21" monitor and the low resolution with 60Hz vertical refresh

Insert CD into computer CDtray, boot machine with CDrom as first boot
device. See the first screen, and F2: prompt at the bottom? If you
don't hit any key then in 7 seconds it will boot the system.
It auto loads all processors, all drivers, and, then goes to the X11
screen, while the desktop manager pops up...
After 45 Seconds, (TOTAL), you are surfing the web if on any broadband
connection on a network, and playing some of 900 games, apps...
Boots and runs from the CDrom, runs in a RAMdisk!
Can be loaded on a hard drive (about 20 minutes for an install of
Debian) or, you can make the configuration files (30kb, total, with all
desktop items, make that 50 kb!) saved to either the hard drive or a
floppy, so your OTHER Linux OS will load quickly, with ALL the correct
hardware device drivers!

guarantees.

It's all about the ISP.
Not if you know how to setup it manually (you stupid newbie :D).
Rebooting is still suggested though, to check if it can really work.
Lol! You forgot my linux machine has been broken more months :D
It was AMD K6-400, 192MB RAM, SiS-530 video chip.
The accuracy of system clock is 1ms in alpha, still too crap though.

*yawn*
I should not have to set it up manually and that is the end of that. Linux
did the equivalent of a BSOD, so shove that up your arse and chew it.
That would be a good door stop or boat anchor, as would you.

Server 2003 is free here. And RAID could be emulated by software, I

A bad ping only means that the server takes longer to response. It's
not a problem for single-direction connection.

English does not have male and female word forms, you chink cunt. In
English, words used to refer to either men or women are masculine. Learn
English.

'Cat'? What, we're talking Schroedinger's Cat here? Why is
a hardcore physics concept part of an OS? :-)
(Perhaps a "newbie-shell" is in order, looking just like DOS? Hmmm...)

Actually, it's all in the mind of the kernel. /proc/cpuinfo
is generated somewhere therein. It's not really a file as such.
A bit like /dev/ttyS0 not being a file, but an interface to
the COM1 serial device, except that there's no device in this case.

It's still legal to go .sigless.
You're not *done* yet. You've not done the following:
[1] correctly installed the nvidia driver identified in step 4.
[2] correctly installed sound.
[3] correctly installed Raid1 or Raid5 hardware.
[4] correctly installed NAT identified in step 6.
[5] correctly installed Gnome.
[6] correctly installed anonymous Email agent.
[7] correctly installed WinE for Windows executables.

Compare this to Windows XP.
Open box.
Unpack, disposing of peanuts in environmentally safe manner.
Place machine on table.
Plug in keyboard, mouse, power cord, network-network box cable.
Hit switch.
Enter in license key.
Accept license.
Click on 'MSN' signup.
Enter in billing information.
Accept.
GO for launch!
You're done. No CD, no confusing configurations, no problems.
No choices, either.
I suppose OE *is* the best -- at propagating viruses and malware.
But it is the most used.
