Im having troubles with my CD-ROM's and i dont know where else to turn so
heres my prob. XP randomly detects my SONY CRX1611 and/or my Toshiba DVD-ROM
SD-M1502 as PIO mode after a fresh/fixed install. Ive installd the VIA IDE
BUS control Drivers to fix this problem, but there has to be a better
way(Drivers cause slow shut down, bootup and hibernate). Not only that, my
burner can no longer burn in any RAW mode(even with the via drivers
installed) all software hangs durring burn(CDClone). This is really annoying
because i cant find the root of the problem. I have soo many issues with my
computer. Its overclocked, i have a VIA chipsets which is buggy with my
SoundBlaster Live! card, and XP OS. If anybody can tell me whats wrong it
could be a great help. I havent installed the 4-1 Drivers yet, i will try
that in a bit. Here is my setup.

Athlon T-Bird 1.4Ghz @1.5ghz (PCI bus 143Mhz)
PNY GForce3 64mb DDR
SoundBlaster Live! Value.
Two WesterDigital 40GB HD
(Ive already undone the overclock, i havent gotten any crashes YET, but
still cant burn in RAW mode, programs still hang, Crash Issue probly still
here.)

Sony CRX-1611 CDRW
Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1502
(unknown sub-fix for sony, ive found many extentions after the 1611 number
but i dont know my own)
(both drives OEM)
(i can not find any documented problems with either drive accept under *nix
systems)

Crossiar 256mb PC133 SDRAM
Generic 256mb PC133 SDRAM
(both tested with simmsoft mem test 50 loops, Set at CAS2)

IWill KT266 Plus Mobo
(unable to flash bios, flash program unable to flash even though i enabled
flash bios setting through the bios.)

Ive also been getting random(Unable to access 0xSOMEHEXSTRING from
0xSOMEHEXSTRING) crashes from all programs ie. AIM, MS Word, Adobe
Photoshop, IE. Since my last Repair install of XP ive only gotten one
BOD/BSD. Before the BOD's said somthing about my Nvidia drivers, now they
mention nothing but the standard error message(with new the nvida drivers).
Im thinking these could all be related. But i am unable to pin down the
problem, it cant be the OS ive done a full reinstall(unless its somthing
inhert with in the OS rather than somthing I installed). Its not the RAM,
ive done full testing.

TIA

Kevin

it may be that xp is testing your ram for you the unable to access
0xsomething etc sounds like memory error go to microsoft knowledgebase and
search on the string...another hallmark of memory errors is sudden
restarts/resets with no error message....you can also try to remove one mem
stick and see if these go away
your problem with direct cd writing is a feature and not a bug

Ive tested my ram. But i will try taking out my Generic stick of ram.. Also
what do you mean Writing with Direct CD? im using CDClone under RAW mode. My
CDwriter supports DAO-RAW mode writing.

XP does not like overclocked systems. Try slowing your processor down to the manufacturer specs and see what happens. Install the 4-in1 drivers too.

Install the 4in1 drivers!!

Swap the CDROMs round, so the Master is Slave and vice versa

Ensure you're using a UDMA66 cable

Try removing one stick of RAM - and you've got generic ram running CAS2 @
143Mhz which is asking for trouble - drop the latency to 3.

It appears you're messing around with your system before you've even got it
stable - set everything to default, fix the problems, THEN tweak it!

And please don't crosspost... especially to so many groups - you're asking
for help and forcing people to xpost their replies.

Just to stick my tuppence in. I totally agree with John's answer, which is
to get the system running in a stable configuration, and then start to tweak
it. I haven't installed the VIA4-in1 drivers at all, I've just let XP take
care of it. Where I do differ is with Harry's answer where he said that XP
doesn't like o'clocking. My AMD XP1600+ (1.4GHz) is running stable at
1.575GHz with and FSB of 150Mhz. I have the occasional lock-up, but that is
normally due to the Gfx card drivers.

regards, Mark.
