Below is the support request email I sent to ahead Nero. Any ideas on
a fix let me know. Also if the new version of Nero works/or not for
you please let us all know.

*****************************************************************************
You need tech support for that which is not covered on your web page
and in the help tool.

I am a registered user. I did a fresh install of Nero 5.5.5.1(no
previous install of any version of nero) because it was listed as
being WindowsXP compatible.

I have WindowsXP installed (NTFS) on my AMD 1.33 GHZ PC with 256 megs
of ram.

The install, according to Windows XP, corrupted my system registry
entries for my optical drives and caused my CDRW drive (Plextor
Plexwriter 12/10/32) and my DVD drive (Creative Labs 12X DVD drive) to
no longer be installed. (not working properly in device manager)

WindowsXP wanted me to uninstall them and then reinstall them. Upon
trying this it failed due to an "Insert the WindowsXP disk" message
for driver support. This was an XP problem because both are plug and
play and should not need drivers and have not in the past. The
WindowsXP disk was useless in the disabled CDRW and DVD drives that
still required installation.

I then booted off a floppy into DOS and tried to copy what WindowXP
wanted (I386 Dir) to my C drive but DOS is not compatible with the
WindowsXP file system and this did not work.

All of this was after I had uninstalled Nero.

I had to use the WindowsXP System Restore feature to get things
working again. Currently I am up and running again minus Nero.

I repeated the entire process and had the same results. I was hoping
the install would work better the second time around and that the
first time was a fluke.

I am now stuck with Nero software that wont run under WindowsXP
without disabling my optical drives.

Please help as I really like Nero and have not had it long.

Thanks
Samuel Vilo

I'm using Nero 5.5.40 in WinXP Pro with a Yamaha 2100 Burner and a Creative
12X DVD player, probably just like yours...I've burned about 70 CDs with
Nero and I still have to produce a coaster...so it's NOT XP. It's something
else in your setup that doesn't work right...highly probable a hardware
problem...did you recently change computer, or some other component? What
about the bios? What about the RAM? What about the PSU? Those are the
components most likely to fail giving that kind of symptoms you're having...
Did you by any chance try another burning program than Nero? Did you try
XP's own burning feature?

Try those things and keep us posted!

If you uninstalled and reinstalled Nero in XP, or did an upgrade from a
previous OS to XP without unintalling Nero first, this is a known error (for
both Adaptec and Nero). The fix was posted here, and fortunately, I
archived it for my own future reference:

HERE IS THE FIX FROM THE MICROSOFT DEVELOPER WEBSITE:
Let me know if it works!
This problem is caused by an association created in the system registry
between
these specific Adaptec driver files and the CD file system drivers for
Windows
2000. If the Adaptec driver files are renamed or removed, then the system
will
loose access to any CD drive (CD ROM, CD recorder, or DVD)
IMPORTANT: The following contains information about editing the registry.
Before
you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a
problem
occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the
Registry"
Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in
Regedt32.exe. 1. Uninstall all CD Burning software from the system.
2. Go to the RUN line and type in Regedt32 and press Enter.
3. Go to the following registry locations and delete the key values for
UPPERFILTERS and LOWERFILTERS: (Do NOT delete the entire
4D36E965-E325-11CE-BBFC1-08002BE10318 key)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BB
FC1-08002BE10318}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BB
FC1-08002BE10318}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11C
E-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4. Close out of Regedt32.exe and reboot the computer.
5. You should have access to your CDROM drives after reboot.

Had the same problem with my system. The common factor seems to be Nero.
Seems strange that with Nero both CD and CDRW are gone but without Nero,
they are OK.
System restore saved the day.

Same problem here when I installed the new version of Nero on Windows XP.
Had to use System Restore to get the CDROM and DVDROM drives back.

So is there anyway to install NEro on a fresh build of Windows XP?

I've had exactly the same problem using XP Home Edition (clean installation)
and Nero 5.5.5.1 (the version that's supposedly XP compatible). A search on
http://groups.google.com/ suggests that these aren't isolated problems.

I tried it before and after getting all the updates from the Windows Update
site and it made no difference. Thank heavens for System Restore!

I'm wondering whether to try installing my (earlier) boxed version of Nero
5.5 and upgrading from that or whether to risk those registry tweaks
mentioned earlier in this thread.

Incidentally, has anyone managed to get UDF reading and writing working in
XP yet?

In article <Q1UC7.19317$a14.1...@news6-win.server.ntlworld.com>,
step...@deletethis.geek.com says...

Version 5.5.5.1 broke the built in CD burner in WinXP for me, but the
drive did still work. I have since done a new clean install of WinXP and
installed version 5.5.1.9 from the CD that came with my burner and it
seems to be working fine without breaking XP's built in burner.

I installed Nero 5.5.1.8 on a clean install of XP Pro and it worked
fine. Nothing seems to be broken. FYI.
