Could be many things but my first guess is bad RAM. Check RAM sticks one at
a time with memtest to make sure all are ok. HTH, J

Reinstall XP and take care, during the installing process NOT to "boot
with Win cd" when unnecessary.
It's easy done.

install loop & failure
Installing XP, at first reboot it hangs, any help please?
intel celeron D, ntfs formatted drive, MSI MS 6787 VER 2 Motherboard
Socket 478. 2gb DDR ram

Ok, a little more info now.
We tried 3 XP CD's, replaced the IDE ribbon cables, removed all other drives
and replaced the RAM. Then we removed the graphics card and in the bios set
the onboard video ok. We turned off all the other onboard stuff, Audio, Lan
and Modem after setting the bios to failsafe boot. Replaced the USB keyboard
& Mouse with older PS/2 versions. Replaced flat LCD with older 19"crt
monitor, replaced AT power supply (swapped 200w for 300w).

We can easily install Linux, and gparted reports no errors. We can install
Win98 on Fat32, Chkdsk reports no problems.

Booted with Win98 floppy, fdisk'ed and deleted/replaced partition etc etc...

We want XP on NTFS.

Every time we go back and format the drive to NTFS and try to install XP
(genuine CD), the first reboot brings up the black XP loading screen with
logo and the little scrolling blue boxes, after a few seconds it simply
hangs... no errors reported, no BSD, the HD just stops and the CD is not
spinning. The HD LED goes out.
Obviously, booting back to CD completely restarts the install and it hangs
again.

We are stuck!
We can't think of anything else, especially as Linux is fast and fine to
install (not a live session, format to ext4 and install) and will run
perfectly every time...

I did see that once on a P-III I worked on...
the only way I got XP to load was to turn off ACPI
in the BIOS. give that a try.

(If it's presently off...then try turning it on)

We are now convinced it is a bios setting something like that, we are now
exploring the "pc type" options in the installer but no luck yet,
although in the installer F5 does have an "ACPI MULTIPROCESSOR PC" option
that we will try next...

How old is the XP cd, and what service packs does it have.

Tried to load XP SP 1 onto new SATA HDD and it didn't want to know, but when
I used XP SP 2 all went OK. Just had to use my key with sp2 disc.

Oooops, also go into BIOS and ensure it is set to boot from XP disc.

Ray Milne writted thus:
We have a genuine XP + SP2 CD, a genuine XP CD and a bootleg XP + SP3 cd,
the result is the same with each. The installer gets to load the files &
drivers on the initial setup blue screen, goes for the auto reboot and
then the HDD locks up on the windows XP loading screen, just before it
should go to the "your windows is being installed" screen with the
countdown on it...

If it is a BIOS setting and you get it to work...
be sure to document it and attach a note to the back of the machine
in case you have to go through this again

This can be the symptom of the XP installation disks not having
drivers to access the disks on your system, the most probable culprits
being the chipset drivers. If this is the case, you need to supply
these drivers during the install so that they get copied to the hard
disk. This can be done by watching during the initial CD boot for a
screen message which says something like: "Press Fxx (from memory
F12) to install extra device drivers!" At this point you insert a
floppy with the driver files and a TXTSETUP.OEM file on it, and press
the key.

The only thing that I'm finding odd is that the hard disk seems to be
available during the first phase of the installation, but apparently
not at the second-stage. What normally happens is that either Setup
can see the HD during the initial phase, in which case the install
goes without a hitch, or it can't, in which case you need to supply a
driver/TXTSETUP.OEM floppy.

The other possibility is that the disk is too large. Certainly W2k,
which is the same major version number as XP, cannot install to a hard
disk over, from memory, 127GB. You have to install it to a smaller
partition, change a registry setting, and then use a program such as
Partition Magic to enlarge the partition post-install. I think this
was fixed in W2k SP4, but I thought it was fixed in XP from SP1, so
initially as I read your first post, I discounted that possibility.
