CISVS.EXE hogged the CPU. I removed it from the "processes". What impact
will that have other than slowing down searches? And if I want to
reinstall, what do I do? And finally, what is the path to tweak this app.
rather than just turn it off?

Since this is not the indexing service perhaps we can assume you have a
cleverly disguised program.
Track it down and delete it.

AHEM! CISVS.EXE - Microsoft Index Service Helper - monitors memory usage of
the indexing service (cidaemon.exe) and automatically restarts it if it uses
more than 40Mb of memory.
