Those speeds are mutually exclusive. Don't confuse them.
Not sure what you mean, Roofus. I was explaining the false reports of
speed. The principle of multiple connectivity guides me. There would be no
assumption of speed without multiple sources of information, of course.
Any single measure can be mistaken. Hopefully, he will get an accurate
display. He knows about what his speed should be, approximately; he just
wants an accurate measure.

The way I was reading it was that there may be a misunderstanding between the two speeds.
Many people don't know the difference between connecting at somewhere near 56k and a port speed of 115.2 so It was just
a reminder :)
The number of people I've dealt with over the years who think their modem connects at 115.2 is quite overwhelming
sometimes.
Yah, well, I followed the whole thread... and apart from figuring out what
the AT commands you offered are supposed to do, it still isn't clear why it
happens that the damned drivers report the port speed as opposed to the
connection speed. I await your deigning to reply with clarification.

They also think they've got a "special" modem as well ;)
So... I assume the answer to my question is that the modem reports the port
speed to the driver.

It looks that way. The problem this person has may be caused by the driver not reporting the speed correctly regardless
of what you force it to do......I suppose it's possible that there is an error in the driver.
Cheers mate,
John.
