Sometimes my modem speed is reported as 115.2kbps (which I know is the DCE
speed) and sometimes it's reported as 44.0kbps. There is never any variation
such as 33.6 or 28.8, only 115.2 or 44.0, and there is never a pattern to it
either - XP just seems to make it's own mind up as to which number it
displays. Any idea how I can get XP to report correct connection speeds?

Thanks in advance,

John
P.S. Using the latest modem drivers from manufacturers website.

add the W2 string to the modem properties

I consistenly got 115.2 reported speeds in the taskbar until I installed
an updated modem driver that was specifically for XP. I noticed that after
the installation, the max speed setting in Phone and Modem properties in
Control Panel was reduced to the true 56k. So, based on that, I'd suggest,
obviously, updating your driver and/or setting the max speed to the true
max. You may need to do this also in the modem config in your Network
Settings for each connection as well.

Those speeds are mutually exclusive. Don't confuse them.

Not sure what you mean, Roofus. I was explaining the false reports of
speed. The principle of multiple connectivity guides me. There would be no
assumption of speed without multiple sources of information, of course.
Any single measure can be mistaken. Hopefully, he will get an accurate
display. He knows about what his speed should be, approximately; he just
wants an accurate measure.

The way I was reading it was that there may be a misunderstanding between the two speeds.
Many people don't know the difference between connecting at somewhere near 56k and a port speed of 115.2 so It was just
a reminder :)

The number of people I've dealt with over the years who think their modem connects at 115.2 is quite overwhelming
sometimes.

For sure. People ask me sometimes what my speed is, and then attempt to
esteem themselves by telling me that they have speeds that are just
impossible. They can't read, mostly, or don't understand the units. Oh,
well.
Many think they are connected at 115.2, and think my explanations are just
my jealousy of their higher state in life!
Hear what you are saying.

Yah, well, I followed the whole thread... and apart from figuring out what
the AT commands you offered are supposed to do, it still isn't clear why it
happens that the damned drivers report the port speed as opposed to the
connection speed. I await your deigning to reply with clarification.

They also think they've got a "special" modem as well ;)

The W2 should show what the correct connect speed is......but this also depends on what the S95 value is as well (which
should be s95=0 by default in most cases).

So... I assume the answer to my question is that the modem reports the port
speed to the driver.

It looks that way. The problem this person has may be caused by the driver not reporting the speed correctly regardless
of what you force it to do......I suppose it's possible that there is an error in the driver.

Thanks Roofus, I'll give that a try.

Cheers mate,
