What steps should I take? I have the upgrade version of windows xp
Home Edition (I was using ME before). Where do I start? Am I going to
have to install Windows Me in order to do this?
Am I going to have problems re-registering the operating system?
At what point do I reformat the hard drive...do I let xp do it?
I have backup of all my documents, but how do I backup my email and
contacts in Office 2000 professional?
Thanks, in advance, for your help! Jim
To do a clean install you can simply boot off the XP cd and let it do the
formatting for you, if it is the upgrade version it will ask you to put in
the ME disk at some point to confirm you had it.
You shouldn't have any problems re-registering your XP, if you do its a very
quick call to MS, its no real hassle but I doubt you will encounter this.
If you use Outlook for your mail search for an Outlook.pst file which
contains your email and contacts if memory serves me correctly.
Think that covers it all, good luck.

Backup all your important data then format the harddrive.
The upgrade version is actually a full version.
You install XP like you would any other Windows OS.
Boot from the cd or create the 6 XP Boot discs:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=33290
The installation will stop at a point and ask for the cd containing the OS
you're upgrading from.
Put in your ME disc once it is rekognized as an OS from which upgrading is
allowed you're prompted to insert the XP disc again.
No need to install ME.

I don't think so.

For your Outlook e-mail and contacts go to the File menu and go to 'export'.
From there it will walk you through it. Tell it to export as a '.pst.'
file.It will ask for a name, whatever works for you and then use the browse
to locate a place to back it up. Example second hard drive or a partition to
your first hard drive then burn it to a cd. Once its done close the Outlook
program and in explorer it should shown xx number of Mbytes with the Outlook
icon. When your ready after your reinstall simply go to the file tab and go
to import and your set. Oh, one thing if you burn to cd you'll have to
change the properties from read only to archive, don't know why smarter
folks out there can tell yah.
best regards. LH

No, it only takes an hour or two on hold trying to get a
new activation key over the phone after Microsoft refuses
internet activation.
(I've had to reformat the XP partition many times.)
It's nice to know Microsoft can make something reliable,
if not XP itself.
