I frequently need to print something from laptop, but I don't have a
printer hooked up. I saw somebody print to pdf file, but I don't know
how they did it,

Any help is appreciated.

You need Acrobat Distiller. Buy Acrobat (NOT Acrobat Reader, that's free).

Ghostscript / Ghostview is a free alternative to Adobe Acrobat. If you don't
mind reading some manuals on how to set it up, it will provide you with a
virtual printer that saves its output to ps or pdf format.

re-reading my last post, of course its not an alternative to the features
implemented in Acrobat, but its does what you need.
