You must have Word or Excel or Powerpoint installed before SpellChecker will
work because OE uses their spell checker

Hi

I am using Windows 2000 with users set up for each of my family on one pc. I
have one internet access account with freeserve anytime, and each family
member has an individual email address, in the form of

d...@myusername.freeserve.co.uk
m...@myusername.freeserve.co.uk
chi...@myusername.freeserve.co.uk
chi...@myusername.freeserve.co.uk

I want to configure this so that each family member can only view their own
email, for instance if dad was to open outlook express, he would only
receive email to d...@myusername.freeserve.co.uk . At the moment, whoever
opens their o/e they receive all emails to each address.

Any clues to how to do this? Is it possible?

Many thanks in advance

Matt

If you look in OE you can create "Identities". Look in the help file on how
to do this. You should then be able to creat each individual email account
within each identity!

You can set identities in OE. Don't know anything about them apart from
them being a feature. Have a look at the help file's and see what it says
about them.

Matt,
I can only get you half way there. How about this:
In Outlook Express, Create 4 new folders, called Mums Mail, Dads
Mail,.........
Go to tools/message rules/mail/new/"Where the to line contains people"/"move
it to specified folder.......
Move each family members mail to their own folder. The outcome will be that
when you download your mail, each family members' mail will be sorted to
their own folder.

As to your desire to protect these email messages from the eyes of others,
the only way I can think of is to use a 3rd party program to password
protect the file(folder). i.e.. C:\WINDOWS\Application
Data\Identities\{71E77760-5345-11D4-B777-CF870A8D0031}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\Mums Mail.dbx

Hope it helps,

Dave H.

Go to File > Identities > Add New Identity

Enter a name like Mum put a check mark in Require a Password. Enter the
password twice as required and you're done.

To switch between Identities go to File > Switch Identity and select the
User you want to switch to, enter the password and you're there.

The best way for us to do this was to set up a separate windows ME profile
for all five of us(under users in the control panel). Then under the OE file
menu you can manage identities so that each profile would only access their
own account. This way we each have our own personal settings and my
documents as well with no confusion and no changing. For example, one son
leaves his display mode set to 800 x 600 so his favorite games will run
while I prefer a higher resolution. Also I don't have to worry about them
messing with my documents.

I think all the replies here have what you need, you just have to put it
all together.
Marie suggests creating a new log on for each family member under the o/s
(w2000), which I think is a good idea if the kids are using it. It will stop
them from killing the whole machine (in theory!). Or you can just create
multiple identities in outlook (the helpfile has all you need to do this).
Because you are using name@myusername, (whether you set up a different logon
or just separate identities) for each user in outlook you will need to set
up message rules. Set one up that says 'if message contains 'name' or 'name'
or name' (i.e. all the other people other than the identity you are using),
do not download from server'. I think you will need to exclude the other
peoples mail, as opposed to collecting just yours, because each address
isn't a discrete address in its own right. (myuse...@freeserve.co.uk is
your actual address, the addition of 'dad@' and the change of the '@' to a
'.' just allows you to sort you mail at you computer. All the mail resides
in the same mailbox at freeserve.) If you don't set up exclusion rules the
first person to dial up will get all the mail, as you are all connecting via
the same username and password.
You can send yourself mail to all the addresses to try it. (you can send
only, then try each identity to see they download correctly).

Hope this helps, don't be afraid to experiment with the rules and identities
to get what you want, and remember the help files are quite often just what
you need!

J.

You seem to have picked a really bad choice of newsgroups to ask the
question in, if you want a useful answer to questions about using
Outlook with Freeserve then try some email, Outlook or Freeserve
specific groups next time, instead of ones that concern themselves with
building PCs or Operating systems you don't use.

It may be of use to you to know that IIRC, with Freeserve you can
specify accounts along the lines of user+host@pop3server. So instead os
putting your username as "myusername.freeserve.co.uk" to pick up all
mail, you can specify it as "dad+myusername.freeserve.co.uk" to pick up
mail only for dad. If you set up 4 accounts in this way then you should
be a little further along the line, if you are doing this for
convenience then that should be fine, if you are doing it for
security/privacy it's not much good as the password is the same for all
users.

Well thanks to all who helped on this!!
I have sorted it using message rules, along the lines of Jester.
Just like to say though if an email has both ma and the missus in the to
line, neither will d/l it. To get round this I have added identities,
keeping one with no rules so this mail will still arrive eventually.
Again guys, thank-you alot!!

Just thought I'd add that you can put whole of the email address in the user
name of the email account properties to stop other email addresses from
downloading at the same time. i.e. put d...@myusername.freeserve.co.uk as the
user name and not myusername.freeserve.co.uk - as this is what causes
everything to download at once.

Use this visual basic script.....copy and paste to notepade and ssave a a
vbs file.

'IDforOE.vbs - Force Outlook Express 5 to prompt for an Identity
'© Tom C. Koch - tk...@mvps.org - revised 12-05-2000
'
'This VBScript prompts the user to select an Identity and then
'launches Outlook Express. It does this by clearing the four
'values in "HKEY_Current_User\Identities" which tell OE which
'Identity is currently logged on. I suggest you save the script
'file to a safe location, then make shortcuts to it in those
'places where you now have shortcuts to Outlook Express itself.
'You can right-click a shortcut, then click Properties, then
'click Change Icon to select a more appropriate icon. The icon
'used for Outlook Express is in the file
'C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE
'
'This script requires that the Windows Scripting Host is installed.
'This is installed automatically under Windows98 SE. If you run an
'earlier version of Windows you can download the WSH from Microsoft:
'
'I wrote this script as an exercise in learning to use scripts in
'place of batch files. I originally distributed this idea in the
'form of a registry file (ClearID.reg) which cleared the 4 registry
'keys. It was called from a simple batch file (OELogon.bat) that also
'launched Outlook Express. Like all batch files, it was a bit slow.
'This script replacement is very fast, so I think it is a better choice.
'
'This script may be freely distributed.

Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")

'Clear the values from the registry
WshShell.RegWrite "HKCU\Identities\Last Username", ""
WshShell.RegWrite "HKCU\Identities\Last User ID", ""
WshShell.RegWrite "HKCU\Identities\Default User ID", ""
WshShell.RegWrite "HKCU\Identities\Start As", ""

'Launch Outlook Express
WSHShell.Run "Msimn.exe"

I never did try it in Win2K, but I know that WinXP keeps it simple. You set
up login names, and each user automatically has their own Outlook Express
and even Favorites. Like I said, I didn't try it with Win2K, but I assume
it would work somewhat similar. Must be a setting you have to toggle.

Windows 2K handles user profiles even better than Me so it's still an
option.
