> how to run scandisk, or another program like scandisk
To check your drive for errors with Windows XP: double-click My computer.
Next, right-click on the disk you want to check and select "Properties" from
the options menu. Now, choose the Tools menu option. There you will find the
Error-checking utility. Click the "Check Now" button to begin checking your
hard disk for errors.
If you like to use the command prompt, the equivalent command for ScanDisk
is "chkdsk".

Delete REMOVETHIS from adress if you reply by mail.
XP went back to chkdsk.exe:
"Start > Run > chkdsk /f" (/r instead of /f, if you want to do a surface
scan) -- It will ask if you want to run it on the next boot; say Y and
reboot.
