I am setting up a peer to peer network through a simple hub. Both PC's
are XP home edition. I have the network protocals set up identically.
The network connection has been set up identically. I have a cable
modem plugged into the hub as well. The network connection is live for
both PC's and both PC's are able to access the internet via the cable
modem (through the hub), but can not see each other. Workgroup name is
the same (username is even the same). File and printer sharing
enabled. One lase note: PC "A" can see PC "B" but can not access it.
PC "B" can not see PC "A" at all. PC "A" is a clean XP install. PC "B"
is an upgrade from Win 98 (thought this might be relevant). Any input
is greatly appreciated.

I am currently working on a very similar problem. My Win98SE machine can
access my XP machine but not the other way. I've even changed my crossover
cable direction with the very same result.

I did (much)more research and found the solution. It seems that
Microsoft now prefers that everyone use I.P. for their network
protocol, which is great on a domain, with a server, with everyone
using an I.P. address - but, on a peer to peer network (like most home
networks), NETBEUI is the way to go (that is what it is designed for
- a non routable protocol designed for use in small LANS).
Windows XP install does not include NETBEUI, even if you attempt to
add all networking components. However, you can add NETBEUI from the
XP CD.
It's on the CD under VALUEADD\MSFT\NET\NETBEUI

Simply set up a network connection and add the NETBEUI protocol from
this location.
After your network connection is setup, you should be able to share
files/folders and/or see the other PC's on the network or through your
workgroup (whether yo have all XP machines, or XP and other Windows
OS's).

I have the same five user names on two Win98 boxes and
one WinXP box. They all see each other.

However, there seems to be a restriction on remotely
accessing the user profile folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>

I haven't figured out the "rules", but I'm guessing that a
remote user named "X" can get into the "X" user's
profile folder on XP, but not another user's folder.

Could it be a simple matter of enabling sharing? I have XP talking to
98, 98se, 95 and ME. I only use tcp/ip.

Interesting. I thought I was the only one with this problem.
I have the same setup but using an Alcatel DSL modem connected to the hub.
Both pc's are on line and can ping each other on the internal IP adress but
they don't see each other in the network.
I would really like to solve this because I need to share files.
In another thread someone suggested that it should be set up using two nic's
on each pc. One connected to the modem and the other one to the hub, but
that does not really make sense to me. What are your ideas on that?
Please let me know if any of you manages to solve this issue.
Cheers
Rob

Only put 2 NICs in one of the computers, with the modem going into the first
NIC, and then the second NIC is connected to the hub. The other computer
just has one NIC that is connected to another port on the hub.

Here's the setup (if my text is preserved after posting, that is):

I've had this problem with a cable connection, and I know the solution.

Each of the computers talking to the modem has an IP address assigned by the
ISP. They quite probably are not in the same subset, i.e. 192.168.0.xx.
If the IP's are not exactly the same except for the rightmost set of digits,
they cannot see each other on the network,

In order to share files between them, you will have to install the NETBEUI
protocol on all machines you wish to communicate with each other.

I am puzzled on this as well. I have win xp home and win 98 both
connected to router to share files and internet. xp can see all "share
enabled" folders on win 98. But win 98 computer can onluy see admin user
files or shared program folders, not anything else (eg other limited users
files) if it is in the "documents and setting folder" even if this is
shared. I think it relates to the fact that the limited user accounts
folders cannot be seen from the other computer. Perhaps it is a limitation
of those accounts. So i need to be sure a file that needs to be moved or
viewed from win xp computer goes to the shared documents folder first.

Annoying but tolerable.

I have also found that certain firewalls (like ZoneAlarm) can cause
these type of problems. ZoneAlarm does not need to be removed, just
reconfigured to medium security (instead if the default "high").

I have the same probelm, but NETBUI doesn't fix it. I have installed NETBUI
on both machines, can PING each other, can even find each otehr using their
IP addresses and "Find Computer" (probably using TCP/IP I guess). But the
XP machine doesn't show up in the Win98's Network Neighbourhood and vice
versa. I'm runnning out of ideas.

Nope, firewall is not working.

I am a single user on the XP machine so I never log in, nor does my wife
log in on the 98 machine, might that have anything to do with it?

Hmmm...I was just looking through the diagrams in the XP Help Centre
(or whatever it's called) and they seem to want you to have your LAN
set up differently than I do at present.

I have my internet coming into my hub, and both my computers hooked
into my hub as well. The diagram suggests that you have the internet
come into your XP machine, then go out (through a second NIC) to the
hub, and have your other machine(s) also connected to the hub.
Bizarre. Don't know if that will help with my file-sharing problems
but it's worth a try (as I do have an extra ehternet card).
