how do i do a clean install in xp

I loaded XP and chose full install .But it has stored all my old settings
and programs.How do I do a format of my h.d so I can start from the
begining.When I loaded my ME start up disc to get to DOS It wouldent do
anything?

Let assume you are booting from your cd.
You get a multitude of options and info thrown at you.
When you reach the bit which asks where you want to put XP you will see that
by careful manipulation you are able to delete your old partition.
You can then create another in the resultant empty space.

Just be really careful so as not to destroy any data partitions you have.
