Where can I download some DVD codecs so I can use WMP to watch DVD movies?

Thank you in advance

(Oh, before some of you losers say it, I am fully aware that I can go to a
store and buy one, or pay to download one, but that's not what I'm asking
here, so save your store-referrals, and save your anti-piracy sermons too. I
paid for XP, so that should be enough. Ms apparently don't think so, but
with each passing year, I find myself less and less interested in what MS
wants.)

You can buy a DVD-R/RW drive. Mine came bundled with CyberLink's PowerDVD
for free ;-)

WinDVD has a plugin for WMP for $14.00.
You gotta understand that DVD decoding is patented and whoever distributes
it has to pay royalties.

Try this file:
http:\\www.surferie.net\donny\files\DVDPack(XP).msi
It is about 382k and should enable DVD.

http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nimo_pack.html

Nero claims this pack includes "just about" every standard CODEC produced
and it is free (and updated regularly).

You can try it but frankly I have doubts it'll give you what you want.
CODECs are compression algorithms for streamed media playback using the
windows media player (and other programs). Of course everybody and his dog
has their own ideas as to the "best" way to do things so there's lots of
CODECs out there.

I suspect what you really need is a decoder (either hardware or software)
which should have been supplied with the DVD drive and plays back through
it's own player. Check the documentation with your drive it may require a
hardware decoder or they may have referenced a site you can download one
from.

If there is a CODEC available to use windows media player to do this it
should be in the pack I gave you the link for.

The pack probably gives every codec known to man except the dvd codecs. I
just spent a whopping $14.95 and got the Cinemaster Media player plug which
works great!

This will give you ALL the best Codec's, that is IF you are referring to DVD
films you have downloaded from the internet?

If so, I personally would recommend

DivX Codec

Which should be enough, but if not, this one as well,

Angel potion Codec

Plus, since many downloaded DVD rips freeze up in spots, this codec IS
FANTASTIC AS IT will allow the film to play right though and only show a bit
of distortion.

DivX AntiFreeze 0.3

These 3 are the only ones I have ever needed and I watch a lot of them.

But let me also recommend one of the Absolute best programs to watch DVD
rips with, which is FAR superior to WMP, and it is called SASAMI 2K which
can be found here. I and many feel it is by far the best one out there and I
love it!

What error message are you getting?

They usually result in a from a driver problem with either the sound card or
the DVD, the error message would give some clues as to which.

When I enable digital sound in device manager for the dvd drive, I get a
warning that it may not play correctly, etc. I enabled it anyway. The
picture is great, just no sound at all.

One of those times it would really help to be sitting at your keyboard to
troubleshoot the problem.

The error would tend to indicate a problem with the DVD drivers, windows is
detecting a potential problem with digital output for that device rather
than the sound card.

What manufacturer and model DVD drive are you using, I'll see if I can come
up with some information on it. Also what sound card is in use?

The DVD drive should be connected to the sound card by a three wire
connector. Is it plugged into the card and in the proper spot (most sound
cards have several connectors for the major suppliers and unfortunately you
can plug some into the wrong spot on the card) the sound card should have
the connector labeled.

If you plug in headset directly to the DVD do you get sound that way?
