is there a way to view the info in the .dmp dump files? My xp system has
started crashing and I would like to see the contents of the dump file--not
just send it to MS for their purposes. Notepad just shows wing-ding type
characters are these files encoded?

You should be able to gain more information from the Control Panel >
Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

Notepad, that underestimated program, can access nearly all files, even
executables since ME. But I doubt the dmp file will make any sense to you.
Just FYI, Notepad writes HTML very well, too. Just write the code and save
as html. It is a very versatile tool.
