All of a sudden I'm getting a "S3 Control taskbar utility" icon on the
taskbar. I don't know what this is or where it came from. What is
this? Why did it just show up? hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhelp. Don't know squat.

assuming you are talking about the system tray, not the task bar.
updated or reconfigured the drivers for your graphics card? Bother to open
it up and see if you can disable the taskbar icon?
