The same just happened to me four times [the last one while I was
typing this message!]. Mine tells me that the shutdown was initiated
by "NT Authority/System". Can anyone help us?

Since your post exposes your IP to the exploit; Block your ports 80, 135, 445,
593, 4444, 5555, 6351, 8718, 33571, 45522, ...aw hell, just disconnect from
the internet.
Microsoft released an update on 17 July 2003 for this, miss it?

Here's a comment you may like about this latest exploit: "If your Windows
2000 or Windows XP machine exhibits any of these symptoms, it must be
completely rebuilt." Don't know if it's true though.

Where did you find that?
Symantec just now posted this:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html
In this update:
http://securecomputing.stanford.edu/alerts/windows-rpc-update-7aug2003.html
Interesting! My XP Home edition has just today started doing exact
same thing!
I've not yet found a solution. System Restore was no help. I posted
my problem to this group also, have not yet received any response.

Symantec posted this a couple hours ago:

It should fix you up.
I just started having this problem today. I am running XP Home with
Earthlink as my ISP. I visited tek-tips.com and took some advice about
running a firewall. After i enabled the XP native firewall, the
problem went away(so far, so good).
Then i went to Microsofts site and began catching up on the windows
updates.
Cheers,
Christopher
CORRECT....Judge
Turn on WinXPs firewall!
If you don't want to keep running the firewall, then do Windows Update!
After the update, you can turn off the firewall, then download and install
Zone Alarm.

Firewalls do more harm than good if your an online gamer and do alot of file
sharing like me. Tell me more about this zone alarm please. What exactly
will it do.....and how much does it cost?
:: The microsoft patch seems to do the trick.

One question. How did you manage to stay connected withOUT getting shut
down long enough?
cheer$,
Harlan Lunsford
Disconnect the Cat5 ethernet cable that connects your PC to the cable modem.
Turn on XP's firewall.
Reconnect the Cat5 cable.
Get the Windows patch (if you can connect to Win Update or from Symantecs'
site).
Get the Fixblast file from www.symantec.com and run it.
Done.
Jerry
Copied the symantec link to a text file, rebooted logged on, downloaded the
tool from symantec.
Copied the Windows.com link to a text file. rebooted, logged on, downloaded
the patch.
Turned off system restore. rebooted into safe mode, ran the tool, rebooted
into Normal mode. ran the patch
