default mail client is no properly installed?

When I click on an IE version 6 email link in XP I get the following message
Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not
properly installed.
Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not
properly installed.
However in Internet Options in my browser under programms my email client is
set up.
Could anyone help?
