I would like to do the following:

- make a backup of the currently active Windows XP partition (FAT32)
using xcopy or a file manager such as Windows Commander to another
partition

- once I need a clean system, start from a (Windows 98?) boot disk,
reformat the XP drive and copy all files back from my backup
partition.

Is this possible?

I know I could also use eg DriveImage, but I'd prefer to have a 1:1
copy of all files in standard format, so I can see what was actually
saved and maybe manually compare/edit things.

(Yep - I could simply try this out, but if it doesn't work, I will
have to do just what I want to avoid: Re-install everything ... :) )

No...use drive image..it includes image explorer, which lets you view saved
folders, etc..Do a clean install of XP and add the programs you want, as a
basic setup, then save use drive image. When you want to restore, you'll have
that clean image you saved, which means you won't need to reformat before
restoring.

Use either ghost or perhaps drive image as you suggest, both of these
products have an image explorer which allow you to browse the content of the
image and to extract files as needed.

Can you backup a hidden partition with drive image? My xp software plus
other stuff was put there by computer manufacturer in case my computer gets
corrupted? If so, how would I do that?
