Is there an easy way to find out what your computer is doing?

It clicks and whirrs away when I think I have no applications running.
Is there a display that will show what programs are running or what
tasks the computer is carrying out? Thanks for your time.

CTRL/ALT/DEL should do it. Just be very careful about ending tasks.

The ctrl-alt-del combo brings up Task manager. Barney is very correct in
reminding you to be VERY careful ending things.

That said, select the Processes tab in Task Mgr and look at the list. Then
forget it. That list of stuff runs in the background, maintaining things,
and making for a pleasant computing experience; this is your "clicking and
whirring away" :)

As long as it ain't Twunk_64 or SaveNow running in the background.
