If I 'd like to split a new 40 GB drive into 2 partitions, what size
should I use for the OS partition for XP?

What is the minimum needed? What is the recommended size?

Thanks, Ben

Please explain the reasons you want/need it split? I have 40 gig NTFS not
split. Does just fine.

Good Luck

I like to break up hard drives into thirds. With XP it's easy. You
may want to go with a 10 gig and a 30 gig partition. You could go
with a minimum of 4 gig for the system partition, but why bother when
hard drives space is abundant.

Ben <ben...@triad.rr.com> asked wistfully:

You will be best off with 5GB formatted to NTFS for XP
If you want to have a FAT32 partition you will be better off splitting the
remainder of your disk so that your maximum is 32GB. For NTFS you can just
use the remainder of the disk.

You will also benefit greatly from getting a second HDD. You might want to
get a 20GB drive and run your OS('s) from that and use the 40GB for data.

More information would have been good, that way I could give you more
definitive advice.

Ignore the replies of the other morons, clearly they do not know what they
are talking about.

It is nice to see you have included yourself in the family of morons
at last. As you wrote "ignore the replies of the other morons" but
accept the reply of this moron (implied). It will make it some much
easier to read your posts in future knowing you are a moron just like
all of us.

Why does WinXP require a 10GB system partition? Most Linux distro's can do
the same job, better, while only taking up 1GB.

Forgot to mention, that leaves 9GB for my data. Until I start working with
movie files, 9GB will last me for years. I could fit linux in well under a gig
though, but I figured 1GB would give enough room to install all the free
software that doesn't come with your purchase of WinXP. Win98SE suits me fine
and I still use it often, but 10GB for XP, why bother?

Sorry I didn't get around to answering you sooner. XP does not require a 10
GB partition. The original poster asked a question. I answered. However you
did not contribute to helping the poster. Instead you decided to plug Linux.
You were also very misleading because Linux can not do the same job as a
Windows machine. Go back to the Linux groups were I'm certain you are
appreciated.

I echo those sentiments. Hey if Linux is better, go for it. It's a free
country to pick and choose the system you want.

I agree. However Linux advocates that pop over into Windows support groups
are just here to troll anyway.

I have a 40 GB hard drive myself, and have 3 partitions, an 8 GB for the
root, where win XP is installed, a 4GB part. for temp files, and the rest
for program files, install files, etc.
I have the latest updates installed for windows and am only using 3.5 GB on
my windows partition, so 8 GB should be sufficient, especially if you use
the NTFS where the cluster size is smaller than FAT32.
