I have Xin XP pro installed on mu existing PC. I want to upgrade to a faster
PC for myself and keep my other as a second PC for my daughter. Can I just
install my existing Win XP to my new PC and keep Win XP on my old PC or do
I really need to buy another copy? will both be activated or will one get
shut down by Microsoft?

TIA,
John

no
you have to purchase each copy of XP you
use
but if you buy a new machine it will probably have XP
on it anyway

You need two copies, or two licenses (you can purchase a second license from
Microsoft).
The cheapest way to go is to buy an OEM XP Pro full version with/for your
second PC *UNLESS* you are considering one of the majors like Dell, HP,
etc. -- they will give you a POS called a recovery disk and you won't be
happy with it.
Buy a good clone, or build it yourself and get the full version OEM XP Pro
CD (it's around $130 US vs. $190 for a Retail XP Pro upgrade).

I will be building the computer myself and I have an OEM version of XP Pro
that I installed on the original computer that I built. I guess I will have
to purchase another copy of the OEM version

You need a separate copy (or license) for each computer. That's
just as it's been for all previous versions of Windows. The only
thing new with Windows XP is that Microsoft has made it harder to
get away with breaking the rules.

No you don't need another copy. Just install XP on the new machine and
activate as usual. Microsoft keeps a database of activation history for
only 120 days. So if your installation is more than 4 month old you should
be able to do it no problem.
Also I was told that MS is keeping an open mind about these things and it is
OK to install the same license on both your PC and Notebook, but you need to
give them a call. A friend of mine installed the same license on three
different machines, but he had to call MS for activation each time and
explain why (it also depends on the person on the other end of the line).

You were told wrong. That's completely false.

What you say won't work. Here's how to do it:

Buy one copy, install it on both machines and don't activate it on either
machine.

Repeat every 30 days.
