I might be selling my laptop it originally cam with XP Home but I upgraded
to Pro. When I sell the computer I was think of just leaving the OS as is.
Is there a way to make 100% sure all of my personal files, passwords and
such are deleted before selling the computer? If so what folders, etc....
should be deleted? I was just going to sell the computer with XP home
software and keep my pro upgrade cd for use with my new computer will my
future upgrade be comprimsed if I do this?

It's difficult to know when Windoze has stashed some sensitive information
in strange places. I've found some sensitive information in the registry on
occasion, and of course the swap and hibernation files can have anything
left in them, as well as temporary files written by applications.

I recommend reformatting all partitions on the hard drive and reloading
whichever version of WinXP you want.

Transfer all programs and such to your new computer from your laptop. Then
wipe the HD in the Laptop. Reinstall XP Home on the laptop and sell it with
the laptop. If you ever sell a computer ALWAYS backup what you want then
wipe the HD. Put XP Pro on the new machine.

As other said you should, at the very least, delete the partition(s) then
repartition, reformat and reload the original Windows Home XP version. If
the XP Home edition was preinstalled on the laptop when you bought it and it
is an OEM version it must stay with the system it was originally installed
on or destroyed. If you want you can upgrade it again to XP Pro. All disks
must then accompany the sale of the laptop.

You can't simply delete information and believe that it is unrecoverable.
There are plenty of programs that can resurrect deleted files. Some are
freeware and some are sophisticated forensic tools For example you might
want to see what this demo version of a forensic tool can "see" that is
still on your system http://www.worldnet-news.com/encase.htm .

Some people advocate wiping a drive prior to selling it. I certainly do.
There are software programs that will do so and render the files that were
on it nearly impossible to recover anything from. The following are examples
and not intended to be an endorsement of the product

http://www.dtidata.com/products_disk_wipe.asp

etc.

Sell it with Home and keep the Pro upgrade for your next pc; or sell Pro
upgrade with pc at full retail price +10% profit if you like.

IMHO best thing to do is clear everything off the HD and install Home just
before you sell it so that the new owner can activate it. I assume Home is
an OEM version for that particular computer so once installed and sold let
the new owner worry about upgrading etc. Use your Pro upgrade, if you don't
sell it, to upgrade your new pc.

Every fucking stupid tit who has replied to you so far seems to have skipped
that bit. If you have an XP Pro upgrade cd, and the XP HE is the only
eligible product you have, you're fucked if you sell XP HE. You won't be
able to install your XP Pro.

If you have a recovery disk with the laptop you should do the following;

1) secure erase the HDD with some suitable software, some HDD manufacturers
provide a utility to do this.

2) install from the recovery disk to put the machine back to it's factory
install.

This will ensure that nobody will find anything you didn't want them to.

As far as future installations of XP go you will need something to upgrade
from. It's likely that your laptop has an oem installation and this wont run
on a home built computer without some fiddling.

If you are planning to build your own then you might want to take an image
of the installed XPHE from the laptop before you get rid, this will give you
a starting point. If you are going to buy a PC with XPHE preinstalled then
your PRO upgrade will be ok to install there. Activation wont be a problem.

What many people don't realise is that McDonalds food is fool of nutrients
and chemicals to stop you barfing.

Ideal for pissed-up munchies.

Duh, they try to fool you into thinking its full of nutrients but in fact
its full of shit.

Maybe it didn't come over as I had intended, but I haven't had any breakfast
yet.

There's lunixfux galore if you're really hungry. No better than dry chicken
bones, but still, you won't starve.
