Yesterday, my modem stopped responding and when I checked, COM 3 had
dissapeared. When I tried to add a new port it started with COM 4, which
despite no conflicts did not start. Any clue where my COM 3 went, or
more importantly, how to get it back?

You have posted twice with issues that all point to registry corruption.
Hint, hint.

Yes I did. Because I have corrupt entries in my registry. I was hoping
someone might point me to the correct registry entries to correct these
problems, as I do not know where specifically in the 30,000 lines of
registry this problem lies.

But thank you for telling me my registry problem was in my registry.

Try this;

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q307545

The article title is not fully appropriate to the problem you have, but the
advice in it is.

Try reinstalling your internal modem.
