It is really a must-read. I wonder how many of the most convinced Linux
advocates are aware of all there is in this article. Best one I've read
on MicroWormMeat since "From MSWord to MSWorld"

A little unrelated ranting:
I love long flowing messages from so called "industry experts" that claim to
have any idea what the future holds. Weren't "industry experts" the same
people that we're telling everyone that Y2k would be the end of the world
and that technology stocks were the place to be? Everyone still working on
AS/400's or writing code in COBOL stand up and take a bow! We love you all.
I've seen a trend in recent years that I've noticed hasn't made it to the
fore quite yet: It used to be that people would say "It's not compatible
with Microsoft."... lately more and more people are saying "Why isn't
Microsoft compatible with anything?".
Case in point: my LDAP server that let's me authenticate all of my *nix
boxes (Linux, AT&T and SCO) and Netware boxes, yet is almost totally
useless when It comes to Microsoft. I can't even create an e-mail
distribution list that Outlook will recognize. I thought MS supported LDAP.
Must be a LDAP# out there I guess.
Here's my prediction (or wish list) for the future:
Consumer demand that all new technology complies to internationally
recognized open standards. I don't care what it is or who I bought it from
it had better work with everything else I own by virtue of it's interfaces
being standardized.
Prosecution for fraud for anyone involved in purposefully causing a
competitors product to perform badly or fail by including sabotage code in
their own product (see: Opera, Symantec, Borland International, Netscape,
etc...).
A court system technology savvy enough to recognize that protecting the
industry is much more important than protecting companies. When I worked
for Borland (cir: 1989-93ish) we got sued by Microsoft for using their API
to put drop down menus in our product. This was when their new API idea was
being pushed as a big selling point of their development suite: "It's code
you don't need to write that will unify desktop applications!"... Well,
they won.
Death by burning for anyone stupid and irresponsible enough to litter the
entire planet with CD's of their free trial software. How can I be expected
to recycle if my yearly waste is one billionth the amount of one day of AOL
or MSN mailings.
And last but not least...
All the people who think a computer should be as easy to operate as a
toaster and who have somehow made it into the Information Technology field
will be sent back to their previous position in life asking "Would you like
fries with that?".
(A Little unscheduled raving... Can you tell I've been working with "people"
today? Pardon my frustration)
