If the downloaded and burned 'image' is OK, suspect your hardware.

You can probably see the start-up messages scrolling (or not scrolling!)
by hitting the Esc key.

Check the download and the burn. Sounds like corrupt file or media.

Runs fine on this 2 years old HP dv6433d...

Change virtual consoles. Or did you not read any of the multitude of
readme files?

No. Rec hardware suggests 1G ram for the generic, minimum 256. I
wouldn't try to run a KDE distro on 256.
There's a PCLOS w/ lxde that ought to be a lot lighter. Also an E-17
one. lxde would be lightest; e-17 weight would comparable to xfce
which there is also a pclos xfce.

Try to boot it in safeboot. It should boot up the live cd as normal.
use esc to see what is going on in the background

The users' web forum might have some help to offer. It's possible the
'Live CD' isn't coping with some aspect of the hardware which a proper
installation process would handle OK.

PCLinuxOS is a 'fork' of Mandriva (back when it was Mandrake). No
lightweight!
Figures. I went with my second choice instead of trying nUbuntu which
is fluxbox based.
Thanx...then dmesg |more from terminal to reveiw...

It's a hip-hop way of stating that what one has just said is
incontrovertible truth.
Word.
You are probably right. but after reading here
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=word
I'd feel better informed if folk used the English language properly so
that there would be no doubt about what was meant - init? ;)
