I know that this isn't a general linux question but I thought I'd ask here
as well as in aolm.
I've just installed Mandrake 9.2 on my machine (Athlon 750, 256 Mb, Voodoo
5500, soundblaster Live! 1024). Whilst the setup recognised my video card
(as with many previous versions of Mandrake and other distributions of
linux), the hardware 3d acceleration doesn't seem to be working. I've
included the XFConfig-4 file which looks fine to me but I might have
missed something. Mesa is installed but the glxgears mesa demo is
terrible, giving ~90 fps instead of the 500-600 fps I used to get.
Similarly, Tuxracer is a slideshow... Does anybody have any ideas?
Cheers,
Dave

Get the Glide libraries (your distro might have packages for them,
otherwise google and roll yer own) and install them.

-Menno.
I tried that and it didn't work... I installed Glide_V5-cvs-6.mdk,
Glide_V5-devel-cvs-6mdk and XFree86-glide-module-4.3-23mdk. There was no
difference in performance at all. Do I have to 'turn on' the glide
support?
TIA,
Dave

Well, i haven't used any 3dfx cart with MD. However, you did load the
"tdfx" driver and GLX whith DRI (in the config you posted). Which was all
i needed to do. Only thing i can think of is the "agpgart" and "tdfx"
kernel modules should be loaded (use "lsmod" to see if they are).
Make sure you don't have the framebuffer "tdfxfb" module loaded - as that
might couse conflicts. Also, the kernel should be compiled with AGP
support for your mobo chipset (and i have no idee if it is).
If non of this helps, maybe someone else has knows.
(If all else fails - i'd start recompiling stuff for it...)

Cheers for your suggestions. Unfortunately, both the "tdfx" and "agpgart"
modules are installed. The "tdfxfb" module is not installed... I'm not
sure about the AGP support for my mobo chipset though... Where would I
find that out?
Dave
It's a parameter in /usr/src/linux/.config but it's probably specific to
your distro as to where they provide a copy of what they have used.
(For instance in Slackware in resides in /boot).
You'd need to know what chipset is on your board, to have it make any
sense (use "lspci", "cat /proc/pci" and/or "dmesg" to find out).
Then try "grep AGP /path/to/config" for a list.
However i'd think it unlikely this would be the problem as to load the
"agpgart" module without support for your chipset you'd need to feed it
"agp_try_unsupported=1" (or some such).
Though have a look anyways...

Cheers,
I've had a look at all of this and, there doesn't seem to be any errors
etc. I might just try recompiling from the source... It's damned
annoying though as I haven't had problems like this since MDK 6.2 (or
something like that...) :-(
Thanks for your help though...

Is it possible that Mandrake have only put 3d support for our voodoo
cards in the purchased versions (like they do with the nvidia and ati
cards) and that they've deliberately missed it out of the download
version?
Cheers,
Dave
