I was reading "Linux Administration Handbook" to learn about BIND 9. It
has a section on configuring BIND 9 for IP addresses that uses a CIDR
netmask of "/26". The book called it "CNAME hack".
IS there an official name for this trick?

Note that comp.protocol.dns.bind is a special group : it receives
messages posted to the bind-users (@isc.org) mailing list.

As indicated : RFC 2317 - Classless IN-ADDR.ARPA delegation.
Do I need to be a certified or professional to join that mailing list?

Not at all. Anyone interested in BIND and DNS is free to subscribe.
I learnt the basics, but need a full-time job to go further.
Soon, I would forget everything I learnt about BIND because
I basically don't need to apply the stuff I learnt at all.
The config files in my Linux server seldom require changes... :)
