I am unable to post this question to comp.protocol.dns.bind, so I
am posting the question here:

I was reading "Linux Administration Handbook" to learn about BIND 9. It
has a section on configuring BIND 9 for IP addresses that uses a CIDR
netmask of "/26". The book called it "CNAME hack".

http://books.google.com.hk/books?id=GB_O89fnz_sC&pg=PA406&lpg=PA406&dq=bind+cname+hack+byte+boundary&source=web&ots=wHXdK1DTkn&sig=ofbOawLJZkCiFGPSnDLItMKfroU&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result

IS there an official name for this trick?

Note that comp.protocol.dns.bind is a special group : it receives
messages posted to the bind-users (@isc.org) mailing list.

As indicated : RFC 2317 - Classless IN-ADDR.ARPA delegation.

Do I need to be a certified or professional to join that mailing list?

Not at all. Anyone interested in BIND and DNS is free to subscribe.

I learnt the basics, but need a full-time job to go further.

Soon, I would forget everything I learnt about BIND because
I basically don't need to apply the stuff I learnt at all.
The config files in my Linux server seldom require changes... :)
