I got sucked into buying a Walmart PC based upon the price because it
really looked like a decent deal to me.
What I didn't realize was that these systems come with a system called
Linux which I have never heard of up until this point.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=2293921&cat=86798&type=19&dept=3944&path=0%3A3944%3A3951%3A41937%3A86796%3A86798&xsell=2592740

All I can say is that Linux really sucks.
Virtually nothing I tried to do with this system worked the way it was
supposed to and I was left with some kind of an orphan.
Wlamart support told me that Linux was junk and that I should install
WindowsXP which is what I did and now the unit works pretty good but I
didn't get all I paid for.
If this Linux is as bad as it looks, it's no wonder that people are
willing to pay $100 for Windows because at least Windows works.

Linux should come with a disclaimer stating how much it sucks so that
people can make an informed decision.

Yes, for someone living in a shed on Workman's Comp, I'm sure it would.

News travels slow in the Ozarks...maybe it's mentioned on some old
newspaper that you stuff your mattress with.

That probably is *all* you can say.

No. The orphan is the child that you and your second cousin had when her
nonna dropped her off on your wooden porch.

Walmart support? You mean, you asked one of the greeters how to create a
database and they told you to shove it?

An idiot such as yourself could barely run an electric can opener, more or
less an Operating System.

Yes, I agree. It should read "IDIOTS: BEWARE" .

Amen brother! But what do you want for free.

Linux, BSD and the other *nixes are not for ready for the masses yet. And
may never be. That's why their still free.

IMHO they do make excellent servers for special apps and for file and print
sharing. Desktop is pretty good too but you have to know more about what
you're doing than most busy people have time for. For now the *nixes remain
the realm of the mechanical types who like fooling around under the hood
more than hauling down the highway.

WinXP may have set you back $100 but let's face it. Even Unix fans like me
have to submit to the fact that Windows loads and runs on almost every
system out there. Linux and other *nixes don't always settle in so easy on
just any computer.

Dude, this is a really bad attempt at trolling. A decent troll needs above
all to be believable. How stupid do you have to be to buy a computer without
finding out what OS comes with it? How far back in a cave do you have to
live to have never heard of Linux?

Do you really expect us to believe you're _that_ stupid and unaware of the
world around you?

In other words, you didn't listen to anyone, didn'r ask anyone, didn't try
to find anything out about this 'system' at all. What the fuck did you
do...walk in drooling, and make a grunt and point at something shiny and say

It looks like the PC you got came with "LindowsOS" which is only one of
many versions of linux available. Complaining the "linux sucks" after
trying just one distribution is like complaining that "cars suck" after
buying a Yugo.

"Linux" is not a company or a product; it is the kernel of an
operating system. Perhaps you mean "Walmart PCs should come with a
warning that the installed software sucks so people can make an informed
decision."

Ehm, are you sure, you got Linux? According to this link you got Lindows
which is a different thing.

Otherwise you would have made a great deal, not buying Microsoft (aka
Redmond Chaos Code).

If I compare my new Laptop (Toshiba Satellite A45 S151) under Linux
(very fast, as I expect it from a 2.8GB Pentium 4) and Windows XP Home
Edition (it's quite slow, even with the good processor). I gave Windows
only a chance, because here in the institute the people work more with
Word and Co. than in my other working places, so that I (horribile
dictu) am forced to use it also, which is kind of a nightmare for me.

So far, I haven't worked under Windows since 1995 (my last experience
was in 1998 with a desaster on another laptop, when I only wanted to
check a web page, my boss created, whether it can be seen properly with
the internet explorer, resulting in setting a bios password so that I
had to send the computer in; from then on I hadn't even Windows on my
hard disk).

I wonder, where under windows are the virtual displays. I have only one
display, where I can put all applications I start at the same time. Cut
and Paste, I found out, works by highlighting something, the pressing
the right mouse button saying copy and then I can paste ist in the same
way.

Under linux's X system you just highlight it and press the middle mouse
button.

Another problem is, that I cannot get my laptop to work with any network
printer here in the institute. Under Linux (SuSE 9.1) this was done by
some mouse clicks in YaST.

These are only some little features which do not work as usual under
Windows. I must say, Linux is much more convenient and straight forward
than Windows.

The linux pc's at walmart look like a great deal. They are certainly a cheap
build, probably lower quality than Emachines. But at $199, who cares. You can
add XP home for $55 license, or pay $299 for the same box with XP Home all
pre-installed.

I'd assume the OP was a troll, but he should have checked on the specs of the
box. You can get those Microtel things with SuSE, Lycoris, Lindows, or XP last
I checked. I hear Sun's JDS will be available soon also.

Funny the OP has heard of Usenet and configures his reader just fine, yet has
never heard of Linux.

Lots of us think MS sucks. I run an all Linux household because everyone
here prefers it to MS. Perhaps if you told us what you tried to do that
didn't work, we could help you. Mainly, Linux is no harder to use than MS,
it is only a little different.

Really? On what planet? I bought an IBM Netvista with Windows on it. It
took about a week before I was so fed up with it I scraped it and
installed Debian. But hey the restore CDs to make great coasters.

I have installed Linux and FreeBSD on five different machines, all of
which I knew nothing about when I got them, and have never had a bit of
trouble getting it installed and running. With Windows I quickly got tired
of needing the driver for this or the update for that, I just said screw
it, and installed an OS that worked.

To my knowledge they have mainly been Microtels. But now there is another
brand too. I've seen SuSE, Lycoris, and Lindows offered by Walmart. They had
a lappy last I checked, it was around $700 and with linux and CDROM. There was
a barebones desktop around $170, add your own harddrive, RAM, and CDRW. Not
really a bad deal for something that's almost ready out of the box.

If I ordered one I'd probably get a JDS one. Or just install Slackware.

No flames, but can you provide more detail? I'd have expected the hardware
for these Walmart PCs to be chosen on the basis of parts ~known~ to have no
problems working with Lindows. I'd have also expected the QC to be pretty
high for the applications and utilities chosen. What things didn't work the way
they were supposed to?

Yeah, but how many of those would know how to
a) Post on Usenet
b) Crosspost to two of the most trolled groups on Usenet
c) Crosspost to specific sub-OS groups (remember, he didn't know about
Linux, but apparently knows about FreeBSD)
d) Post from an account in a different country

Besides, he has no idea what a full copy of Windows costs.

This is a troll, plain and simple. From one of the more prolific trolls,

my mother is one such person, who doesn't know- or think she needs to know,
the difference between hard drive space and RAM.
She DOES know the difference between Mac and Windows (Windows plays more
games, in her opinion- but the Mac crashes less and there's a software guy
who can fix crashes in the family)
she doesn't know the difference between a Pentium and a 486, and I swear she
wants to get the ol' Heathkit running again (SanyoBASIC?)
Face it tho'; if it weren't for the average neophyte (of any gender) who
happened to have a computer fall into their hands, repair shops wouldn't be
needed- most users worth their salt can fix 80% of their problems
themselves.

Actually, the link is for a pc *without* an OS. I wonder which Linux flavor
he put on it? If none, no wonder it runs poorly.

Better yet, let's offer to fix it if he pays for shipping BOTH ways for just
the box.

You appear to be comparing a CD release of MS with some made up
FreeBSD install.

Just stick in the CD on BSD and it's quite similar.

If you are going to use made up install directions you should at
least use some that work, or at least LOOK at FreeBSD.

Numpty.

You got ripped off buying an old Duron 1.6 with bugger all memory and you
are blaming Linux for it?

Wrong most of the time.

Either:
cd /usr/ports/CATEGORY/PORTNAME
make install

or:
portinstall NAME

or if you want binaries:
pkg_add -r NAME

Linux, Debian for example:
apt-get install NAME

or if you want to compile from source:
apt-get --build source NAME

Most of the time you don't even need to look for a download site.

But the Walmart offer at the OP's URL explicitly states that it comes
with LindowsOS 4.0 operating system.

What the heck is "LindowsOS"? Is it just another distribution of Linux
with a bunch of applications like SuSE, Redhat, Mandrake, Debian,
Slackware, or whatever those might be?

I had a similar experience with an IBM NetVista and I ended up returning
it after about a week because it was the slowest Pentium 4 based machine I
had ever used due mostly to all the custom IBM software installed I think.
To be fair, I don't think IBM is any different than any of the other

Pardon but who usually gets blamed for spouting obscenities? I also use
both, admining my linux at home but having to rely on the IT department at
work for windows. The standard solution to problems by users is to back-up
the users local data and reinstall. They say they do not have time to
troubleshoot problems. I have yet to see these microsoft anointed ones
perform any sort of hack worthy of the title sys admin. From the evidence
shown to me, the average microsoft advocate is a drooling simpleton.

Broadly speaking, yes. It's a distribution that's aimed at new Linux
users. Check http://www.linspire.com for details. (They've been forced to
change their name because of Microsoft lawsuits claiming trademark
infringement -- MS claims that "Lindows" is too close to "Windows.")

Lindows is a very poor distribution, IMHO; it uses the root account for
basic access, which of course is a huge security no-no. I had other
problems with it when I tried it a few months ago (see
http://www.rodsbooks.com/distribs/index.html#lindows for details), but
the security blunder of making root the default login (with no obvious
way to change that) is enough to make me recommend strongly against
anybody using this distribution. I'm much more impressed with Xandros
(http://www.xandros.com) as an introductory Linux distribution.

As to the OP's gripes, I'd recommend that others try a better Linux
distribution. (I figure the OP's mind is closed by this point, though,
assuming the posting wasn't part of an astroturf campaign.) Lindows
really isn't very good, but that doesn't mean that Linux is bad. There
are lots of Linux distributions, each of which has its strengths and
weaknesses. See my Web page (http://www.rodsbooks.com/distribs/) for my
thoughts on several of them.

Wake up jackasses! How hard is it to see that you're being trolled?
What OS did the OP expect the machine to be loaded with? He's never heard
of this sucky thing called "linux". Right. And the machine was delivered
by Santa Claus and set up by the Easter Bunny.

Life is too short to indulge these cretins. At least wait until they

I heard this is fixed and you run as a regular user now.

As far as security risk, yeah possibly if someone took the time to make an
exploit for something like Firefox. Would be difficult cause linux doesn't
have the holey scripting issues and My Computer Zone like IE and Outlook. And
I doubt Lindows runs many daemons, it's just a desktop OS. Surely it has some
sort of built-in firewall. You can't attack what you can't see.

It's certainly a potential damage risk to be running as root 24/7.

How does it work? Seems like some of these trolls make a single post and sit
