Please post your smb.conf file so we can have a look at your Samba
configuration.

seems to me more like a windows issue.

Did you log in to win with ESC (i.e. without user login) ? If yes then
Windows does not use/allow networking et al.

What is your "encrypt passwords =" set to in smb.conf? W98 defaults
to encrypted passwords. As someone else suggested more information
about your setup (smb.conf, output of testparm, etc.) would help us
help you.

If you post here you read it here unless you have a *very* good
reason for why e-mail is needed.

Also ...

You've asked a FAQ so I'm posting a "pre-recorded" message. It's only
fair. :-)

You asked about how to get information for a "newbie". Probably you
mean yourself. Or you've asked a typical "newbie-like" question. Here
is my current "Newbie Help File":

Where to find: Info for Linux/Unix Newbies:

(Your distributor's web site!)
http://www.linuxdoc.org/g_search.html
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/installing_linux.html
http://www.linuxquestions.org/
http://www.linuxpowered.com/
http://www.freebsd.org/projects/newbies.html
http://support.daemonnews.org/
http://www.unixgeeks.org/

Where to find: SAMBA Info for Linux/Unix Newbies:

(Search Google! See further down.)
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/
ftp://ftp.samba.org/pub/samba/docs/htmldocs/
ftp://ftp.samba.org/pub/samba/docs/manpages/

Where to find: Info for the *extreme* Linux/Unix Newbie:

Incl: SAMBA, Apache, SSH, etc.

Where to find: Apps for Linux/Unix Newbies:

http://www.freebird.org/ <- UnixWare freeware, etc.

Since you asked the question you did or asked for the help you did
then you are obviously uninformed about how to find information for
yourself. With that in mind here are some more helpful URLs where you
may do your own research before asking a question:

http://www.faqs.org/
http://www.google.com/advanced_search
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search

That last one will give you access to all the other times your exact
question has been asked and answered. This is true unless, of course,
you *are* the first which is unlikely if you are seeing this message.
All you need to do is try to come up with good search criteria.

Finally, I am guessing that you may be new to USENET if you posted a
question about how to find information or obviously have not done
your research. With that thought see these:

If after doing your own research by reading the wealth of information
contained in the above URLs you still have questions *then* come to
these newsgroups and ask using the information found on the
smart-questions.html page above.

Additions and corrections to this information is welcome.
