I'm trying to get all the Windows things I use set up in Linux. Anyone
know what to use as a client to connect to ICQ. I thought a IRC client
would do the trick but I haven't been able to get it to work for ICQ.
TIA. Note that I'm a new Linux user.

Those are just 3 of the icq clones available.

icq >< irc

search the web for "icq linux" or licq (www.google.de), i'm sure you'll find
something matching to you ;)

i prefer micq, a console-clone of icq ;)

Thanks all for the help. I'll try one or more of the suggestions and let
you know how I do.

Well I installed LICQ but it had a prereq of 'libcrypto.so.o' and
'libssl.so.o'. I ignored the prereqs because I could not find them on my
RehHat CDs. Unfortunately when I start LICQ it complains about libssl
being missing.

I looked on the RedHat site but couldn't find aqnything. The
www.licq.org site stated that the licq download was complete.

Help again. TIA.

Well, dont ignore prereqs.
If you use Redhat, install the openssl-* rpms.
Or you could go to www.rpmfind.net , type libssl.so and get
the rpms for your distro.

Licq seems to still be using the old protocols that don't work very well
anymore. I saw that the development version is going to work with the
new icq2000+ protocols which are based on AOl's Oscar protocol. The
newest version of GnomeICU and Gaim work about the best at the moment.
With gaim though you have to use the Oscar protocol and not the ICQ
protocol but that's easy to set up under the accounts menu.
