Given enough ignorance it may be that her idea of what it was, was
limited to 'cheaper'. She may have believed that all computers run
Windows and that Ubuntu is just another sort of Windows (like Windows XP
or Windows Vista or Windows 10; Windows Ubuntu - just another version).
If Dell offer pre-installed Ubuntu they must be prepared to provide at
least as much user support for it as they do for the other operating
systems they pre-install. So a phone call from the customer should have
triggered a sensible response (such as instructions for getting on line
without using a Windows installation CD and what programs to use for web
browsing, email, etc). Somehow that didn't happen.

I thought they showed some understanding of the fact that Ubuntu has
nothing to do with Windows and won't run software distributed for
Windows. They also pointed out that her ISP were able to offer help to
get her on line using Linux, and that the college said that all their
services were accessible using Linux, so the puzzle really has to be why
the woman couldn't sort all that out for herself with one or two phone
calls.

How or why she sought publicity is the real question. Profit springs to
mind but she may be disappointed if that was her motive.
At least Dell's offering of something that isn't Windows has been given
some publicity.
