I just started learning about torrents and found MKV & AVI
foreign language films from the fifties without subtitles.

Is there a good place to get English subtitle SRT files?
How do I add them to the MKV and AVI files on Ubuntu?

I downloaded some subtitles using Google but when I looked at
the files, they were filled with jokes which were NOT in the movie.

Is there a RELIABLE site for foreign film English subtitles?

To add them into the video, you will need to generate a new video file
with tools like transcode or avidemux, there are two options how, either
as hardcoded directly on the video or in the mkv case you can store it
separately.

You don't need to embed the subtitle to the video, it's okey to have it
as a separate file, just store it in the same directory as the video,
having the same name on the subtitle as the video will make many video
players to use the subtitle automatically as for example mpv and vlc.

Video name...: my.funny.foreign.movie.mkv
subtitle name: my.funny.foreign.movie.srt

play video with subtitle: mpv my.funny.foreign.movie.mkv

In some countries it may be illegal with these subtitles, no matter if
netflix uses them or not. One site that often has a great deal of
subtitles is www.opensubtitles.org

If you are into watching videos, then kodi would most likely be a tool
for you, it includes plugin which will automatically download subtitle
for you (has to be enabled first).

Or something like: "my.funny.foreign.movie.LAN.srt"

Where "LAN" would be the two letter language code. This way you can have
several languages. From memory, I haven't checked to see if the syntax
is correct.

Ah? Interesting. Didn't know that.

How does it identify the movie, by file name?

It will search on the title (+ episode) and try to match the file name
from the result, if I remember it right.
