Can someone tell me why the logical volume will not extend?

I haven't done anything with Linux LVM but I've used HP LVM which is very
similar. Try -
lvextend -L 558G /dev/vg01/lvdata
That sets the end size rather than the additional space. The uppercase L
also uses human readable values like Gb and Mb rather than extents. Much
easier.
If that doesn't work then post the output from
lvdisplay -v /dev/vg01/lvdata
You might have some contraints on it.

Trying to extend to a fixed size doesn't work either.
I get:
lvextend -L 45G /dev/system/home
Extending logical volume home to 45.00 GB
Insufficient free space: 11520 extents needed, but only 4953 available
vgdisplay shows plenty of space, but the extent count does match the
lvextend error:
vgdisplay system
--- Volume group ---
VG Name system

Format lvm2

Metadata Sequence No 10
VG Access read/write
VG Status resizable
MAX LV 0
Cur LV 8

PE Size 4.00 MB

Free PE / Size 4953 / 19.35 GB
VG UUID rkZOMa-XP0C-SxQp-k2N1-ftFU-H2Bt-VkXCR3
It gets even more strange. If I try to squeeze even a little more
space out of it:
lvextend -l +4500 /dev/system/home
Extending logical volume home to 57.58 GB
Insufficient free space: 14740 extents needed, but only 4953
available
I try to add 4500 extents when 4953 are available but it fails!

Just so you know, this is a wild guess, and so may not actually be the
true cause. Also, I haven't actually done much with LVM, apart from
using it to consolidate a couple of drives into a single container.
However, from looking at this response, my guess is that LVM can't
extend the volume because it needs to create a new container of the
requested size into which to copy the old file system. If that is the
case, you can't extend the volume without adding at least another 40GB
to /dev/system.
