Substitute for the old kpackage

I miss the old "kpackage" as I used it to find file locations in
specific RPM packages and to see the contents of an RPM graphically
before I installed it (or NOT). The new kpackagekit just jumps right
to install. I did a "help" on it, but could not see any way of
configuring it. Dolphin also jumps to kpackageKIT rather than lets me
explore.

So is there a graphical substitue for the old "kpackage." My current
workaround was to install it from my old 10.3 distribution. Guess I
was "lucky" it found the dependencies. This does work, but there is a
hole for me in the newer distributions that kpackage filled.

i uninstalled kpackagekit on 11.3 and 11.4 because it is troublesome
(and many/most of the helpers on the openSUSE forums do the same--check
it out)..

and its look-alike on 12.1 is named apper, which has the same troubles,
so many recommend it either be disabled (right click on the panel icon,
and . . .) or uninstalled (using YaST or zypper)..

the features you seek (peering inside RPM prior to install) are all in
YaST Software Management or YaST Online Update (YOU)....in fact, once
you have banished packagekit you will need to run YOU occasionally to
check to see if there are updates available for your system..

If i got this right, if you want to see what is in a rpm go to konqueror
then navigate to the rpm file and right click on it and scroll down to
preview in krpmview. For a tar file or zip file do as above but this time
select open with ark.

no, neither houghi nor i mentioned either konqueror or ark..

mc does all the OP asked for, and more..
and, YaST too..

i have no idea if it can be done with konqueror (never tried as mc is
far too easy...and quicker than konqueror ever dreamed of being)..

and, i wouldn't want to open anything up with ark just to see what is
inside..

There was no Norton Commander in DOS/360 ;-)

The world did not begin with the PC industry, and some of us go back
farther.

But, DITTO came close

I started on DOS/360 (we had 2 360/30's in our shop when I started in 1977).
Later, I was a system programmer on DOS/VS, DOS/VSE, VSE/SP, and VSE/ESA
systems.

Thanks - I am just enough of an intermediate user that I did not
associate "mc" with Midnight Commander. I see it is part of the
OpenSuSE distro and am in the process of installing it to give it a
try.

On konqueror - I thought that it was replaced by Dolphin and it was
KDE3 - However, I now see it got installed and actually appears under
the "Browsers" menu. I used it a lot for what I wanted under 10.3.

I'm sure you are right. I don't claim to be around the longest,
but I do go back to the days when Knuth was an undergraduate.
