There is a reported bug for Compiz that seems to effect *multiple
distributions*.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1158267

My input was:

Also effects Ubuntu 13.04 running GNOME Fallback (aka GNOME Classic)
environment.

ANY window *already* maximized, the [Close][Minimized][Unmaximize]
buttons on window corners do not work.

In GNOME the all Context Menu options on Taskbar for the window do
work, [Close][Minimize][Maximize/Unmaximize].

Why waste your time in gimmicks? Just use the default Unity, or maybe
LXDE/IceWin! :)

The problem is NOT limited to GNOME, it effects all environments using
Compiz which includes Unity. Also distributions like SUSE.

By the way, Unity sucks (IMHO), as does the normal GNOME. That is why
I use GNOME Fallback (aka GNOME Classic).

When I first used Unity, some while ago, I found that it sucked even more
than the Gnome shell. Nowadays it is quite usable and actually my desktop
of choice. Now if they would put the menu's back on the Windows
themselves, it would be near perfect.

By the way, there is a package that will put a classic (treed) menu
for Unity, see....

Just a reminder for them. A good old Window$ 3.1 desktop is good enough
for launching programs... :)

You are talking about something completely different and outside
of the scope of the newsgroups to which you have posted.

So to put the context back ...

A good old twm desktop *is* still good enough for launching programs.

QUOTE

Nearly every window manager since has borrowed heavily from it,
either directly, or indirectly through other window managers

UNQUOTE

Its fundamental weakness compared to later window managers is
its lack of multiple workspaces.

It doesn't appear to affect Compiz when using Emerald window decorator
though.

I can't reproduce the problem described at your bugreport link. Nobody
there reports using Emerald either.

All because

" Emerald theme manager is no longer available in
Ubuntu Software Center since 11.10 Oneiric "

But you have proved yourself more capable at customizing and
ehancing, and not a follower of the "I am too lazy to install from source"
naysayers.

Presumably you have no problem using the Emerald decorator regardless
of chosen theme?

Overglossed is the only theme installed. With the default pixmap engine
selected, "Everything done with customizable pixmaps!" Could be a major
factor.

Turn off the gaudy glow around windows, and Overglossed looks sharp.

I had an old fractal program that ran a "Geos" "OS". I think it was
just a GUI front end for the app. It was a great early fractal
generation app though. "FracTools".

Now, I can't get it to run at any decent resolution, as it doesn't know
how to hit modern cards. I have to fire up an old machine. Maybe I can
get a remote process thing going and calculate the pixels on one machine
but display them on another.

It did every pixel. Not like today's crap fractal software, which does
bit blts and wont go deep or get highly resolved.

Or maybe I just need to find the right fractal gen app.

Thanks all, but just upgraded to 13.04 and off course that again breaks
Unity on multiple displays. Being forced back to fallback mode reminded
me exactly why Unity is a good idea. It just works (for me). I may try
Cairo Dock next.

Sometimes FOSS sucks greatly. But I have the source, so it's all my own
fault....

This happens when you use the Ambiance theme alongwith gnome classic.

Try the Mediterranean theme, watch the bug disappear magically.

It seems there is some issues in Compiz or the Ambiance theme (at least the themes that come from the Ubuntu Theme) that causes it.

This is a frustrating issue really.

I had to use the Mediterranean theme to get around it.

or else, you can download the latest Compiz Code which has a fix, compile it yourself/create a deb and install it. There are some instructions in some forums for compiling the same. Google for the same.
