If I click on a file, it immediately opens. Is there a way I can set
Dolphin to only open files if I double click?

your question was: Is there a way I can set Dolphin to only open files
if I double click? and the answer is *in* Dolphin..

in my Dolphin (may be different in yours):
Settings > Configure Dolphin > Navigation > Double-click to open files
and folders

True, but not complete.

In 'Menu/Configure Desktop' (assuming KDE) there is an option under
'Input Devices/Mouse' that chooses double- or single-click to open
files. Which should enable it for behaviour in other sea-mammals as well.

but sir, you didn't ask how to do it in other creatures, instead you
asked how to do it in Dolphin.

well...teach me: are you now saying that on your machine, in order to
have a double click open files in Dolphin you must select double click
in _both_ Dolphin AND Configure Desktop, or else it continues to open on
a single??

No, sir... ;-) I did not ask a thing. The OP did. I was merely adding to
the tales.

<Lesson>
No, I'm not saying that. On my machine (BTW: standard oPeNSuSe 12.1 with
Kde4.5) I _only_ need to perform the actions I described to be able to
single- or double-click anywhere. I.e: anywhere of interest. So that'd
be Dolphin, other sea mammals and other creatures (lesser and more equal
for that matter).
</Lesson>
;-)

Haven't come across any application that did not adhere to the setting.

oh i missed that important fact....

btw, since you brought up sea creatures:
you misspelled 'tails' just above! ;-)
