isn't gftp one of those go-to pillars that should be the
default ftp client of every version of every distro?

I think most folks have switched to sftp (it's all I use these days)?
which as a GNOME user is available via Nautilus...

That's debatable, everyone has his pet apps :-)

I have used gftp in the past, I liked it. But these days I rarely need
to connect via ftp.

I use it to upload files to my hosted web site after
they get rung out on local server. I'm used to it and
need nothing else for the job.
